Captain Kurt, I need some help here...

Hey Captain,

I was doing an auto-installer test run for the first 19 missions of the 20th Fighter Group. If I include all of the aircraft, weapons, ships, vehicles, and objects, as well as the accompanying readme files so that you can run it on a ETO base install with no issues, I end up with a size of nearly 200MB when zipped up.

This is with everything thrown in, and includes things like AI bombs, all of the scenery objects for my missions, the GSL scenery, and Achim's bases in France, as well as the EuroTargets needed.

Would an auto-installer cut this down to size, or am I going to have to abandon the idea of an auto-installer? I ask this because the entire package, which includes both campaigns, will be a bit larger, although most of the aircraft and a good portion of the scenery are used during the first 19 missions.

The standard method using hyperlinks and included tweaked files gives me a package of just under 2MB.

Any advice on how to proceed will be very useful.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Rami

All you are trying to include, especially the scenery files, will really inflate the size of your package. The auto installer can't compress the files any more than zip can. But I don't think you need to abandon the auto install idea. Just break it into several smaller sized installers like part 1, part 2, part 3 etc. - numbered in the order which the contents need to be installed.

Players will need to download all the items anyway and having to download 3, 4 or even 5 auto installers is still much easier and quicker than downloding 50 to 100 add ons one at a time. And the auto install will make sure they get installed correctly.

Off topic thought here: I've often thought what we really need is an auto install for setting up the Europe, Mediterranean, and probably the PTO theaters. There are so many different packages of scenery that need to get loaded in a specific order that even with your excellent guides, players have trouble with set up. And there are probably a number of guys who don't even attempt it, finding it too complicated. But the size of the packages will be large just like this one is and most won't try to download 200mb at one time.

Let me add my support to your suggestion Captain Kurt. My first attempt to install the ETO was such a miserable flop that I shelved the whole thing. It took me a year to finally gut up and try again. The 2nd time was a success I'm happy to say and now I've added in addition to the ETO, ( with the help of Rami's install guides) an MTO and a PTO based on Rhumba's mesh, but it took a lot of patience.

Captain Kurt, a terrific idea! Though the instructions in the specific theatre installs are well done, I, too have had problems in the past. I've actually saved the basic installs seperately to avoid having to go through the experience again. That says something about me, not the theatre installs, by the way. Your idea would save a lot of frustration and angst for some, for sure.

Cheers.

Hi guys! I believe , a autoinstall of any scenarys would be great!! For that , let the best of our understood people to include suchs needed files. I am the worst guy to understand scenerys.

I have to say, I HAVE DOWNLOADED ENTIRE GAMES like W.O.T. with more than 7Gb with a few gigas of pachs, of course.. I have now 1Gb/s internet speed but last month my speed was 100Mb/s . And if my speed was only 28Mb / s, it would be worth waiting a few minutes for download that autoinstall.

We have also take in count, what behaving we espect in game. My PC have a good videocard but is old , any way...

Please do something , i think that there are many people (me included) wasting time downloading and installing without to know WHAT WE ARE DOING.

Cheers
Mario

Hooray

I for one (being the idiot I am on a computer) would LOVE to see ETO etc. as auto-install.:redfire:

I agree. Auto-install would be a great idea for any theater of operations. I would love to see such things for ETO, MTO and EFTO, and of course it would be awful to have another auto-install for at least all the must-have PTO sceneries. I don't care spending one hour downloading the packages if doing this saves me ten (or more) hours installing each theater of operations manually. :encouragement:

Good morning,

Well okay then! I will continue cobbling together the necessary parts. Thanks for the encouragement!

Rami,

I think RJ was doing something simular a while back. mostly for his own use. I could be wrong of course. Though he might be a resource for you. You can ask.

I agree with the rest, that an auto install for the scenery would be great. I can figure it out esy enough but the downloads required are a killer. having just a few would be awesome.:encouragement:

just a thought!

My main cfs2 installation is not in the default route. Then please , make this autoinstall , in the way that we can choose which route to follow.:encouragement:

thank u
Mario

I suggest an auto installer that creates each folder, i.e. WETO, EETO, MTO, PTO, KOREA, VIETNAM, under the C:\Program Files (86)\Microsoft Games\(theater)\Combat Flight Simulator 2

OR

Like Rami is fond of doing, place an install with only the engine sounds, models, and scenery in one folder and the theater installs point back to these with alias files.

Y'alls thoughts??
