Happy Independence Day USA!

Well boys, here in Deutschland amerika, amerikanisch, amerikaner are the named used for yanks from the USA; America, American, Americans.

And every other nation in North, Central, and South American continents are called by their country names.

Now, if we want to go into broader categories, we go with Western European, Eastern European, North American, Central American, South American.

But when we narrow the focus, American is generally accepted world-wide as speaking of those who are citizens of the USA.

And trust me on this: many from Canada, Mexico, and points south of the USA-Mexico border when traveling in many parts of the world do NOT want to be referred to as "American"........

Yup...just the way of the world. And for those who would "reinvent the wheel" by debate for the sake of geographical accuracy, this common sentiment is what they're up against.

Sorry but there is a country called America. We are the United States of America. That is the whole name. Hence the USA for abbreviation. We are called Americans. United States is just the short title.

In any geography book there are two continents North America, which includes the USA, Canada, and Mexico down to Panama. South America starts after Panama. Its all relative anyways.
Nopes, as you said...is United States of America. America is the name of the continent. America as a continent is previous than USA (for this reason the Founders of the USA include the world America).

It's very freaky...same than call Europe to the European Union (EU).

About the continents...Any geographical book? are you sure? As I said I use the definition explained by Roxanne. Each continent or region is divided in several zones. Europe have southern Europe, Northern Europe, Western Europe and Eastern Europe...but nobody said that Northern Europe is a continent. But you need to be a open mind...In other parts of the world teach another definition.

Last I knew there were only seven main continents. Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, North America, South America. Unless things have changed in the last 20 years since I last attended school.

Which may be the case since scientist don't want to call Pluto a planet any more.

Geologically speaking, North and South America are separate entities - the Panama Isthmus did not exist until a couple million years ago. Until that point, the landmasses had distinctly different histories.
Broadly speaking, the seven main Continents as they are culturally defined also have some geological relevance as well - even the somewhat poorly defined Europe/Asia boundary. Geologists recognize even more "continents" than that, though! India is probably the best example.

A little snipet...

"And who wrote Vespucci's Christian name on the maps? The King of Spain? Our founding fathers? Vespucci himself? No -- it was none of these. We were given our name by an obscure German clergyman and amateur geographer named Waldseemuller. Waldseemuller was a member of a little literary club that published an introduction to cosmology in 1507. In it he wrote of the new land mass that Vespucci had explored:

'I see no reason why anyone should justly object to calling this part ... America, after Amerigo [Vespucci], its discoverer, a man of great ability.'"

That would be getting into plate techtonics correct?
