Suggestion: add FSX-Steam as a new forum?

Just a suggestion, what about adding FSX Steam as a separate sub forum?

I have a feeling it's popularity will increase, and it might get confusing simply looking for threads about it within the FSX-O forum.

i agree with the seperate forum.....and im having a hell of a time with the FSX.SE...i went to the FTX/orbix forums and followed instructions but i still cant install anything..not even a new plane...im really getting frustrated.

Which is exactly why I suggest it as a sub forum of FSX perhaps? I must admit I haven't tried installing anything to it yet. NC

Yes, I agree with the separate subforum request too.

Are there really that much specific FSX.SE problems or news items to justify a separate FSX.SE forum? Personally I'm not really a fan, as I think the forums are scattered enough already which make it more likely that people miss information than that it actually contributes.

Apart from the location on which it is installed and the way the software is distributed there is not too much difference between the CD version and the steam version. In my opinion it is currently unlikely that the steam version will develop in a different way like for instance Prepar3D does.

Daube: I don't know whether the forum software is able to do this. However when somebody puts it in the title of the thread/post that it concerns a specific FSX.se problem I think that should be clear enough.

But I will take the suggestion to the topfloor.

Cheers,

Yes, I agree! I've only counted four FSX Steam threads on the first five pages of this forum. In my opinion that's not enough for a new (sub-)forum.

Apart from the Steam Utility, FSXSE is basically just a recompiled FSX. The same repetitive, basic questions regarding FSX hence also apply to FSXSE.

As everyone can see a sub-forum has been created called FSX SE Problems and Fixes. This sub-forum should be used for just what it says and not general comments. My only worry about creating a sub-forum for FSX SE is it would splinter the general FSX forum. Thus the title for problems and fixes. We shall see how it goes. All comments are appreciated.

P3D started out slow also but is now the go to place here for that version. FSX-SE will be that same given a couple more months.
Might be better to start early while the threads can still be identified.

Funny though to watch the new FSX-SE users at Steam posturing to be the guru in their forum.

I totally agree!

I also like the idea of tagging posts. I don't like opening a post, and then coming to the conclusion that it is related to a sim that I do not use.
So I would love to see tags, like "FSX-O", "FSX-SE", "P3D" and "CFS"

Here is a copy from another forum dated Dec. 19 of the changes with the steam version.
There have since been several other changes made as well. FSUIPC, a couple of dll. files, ect.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition Change Log
The below change log represents the key changes made to FSX: Gold Edition to create FSX: Steam Edition.

General
* FSX: Steam Edition is now built using the VS2013 compiler for better optimisation and performance. (Still makes use of VS2005 libraries for backwards compatibility.)
* Updated splash, launcher and mission preview images for FSX:SE versions.

Multiplayer, networking and communications
* Gamespy networking now replaced by new Steam networking.
* Game chat now integrated with Steam chat
* Friends/Banned lists now integrated with Steam.
* Game invites now use Steam.
* Host networking defaults to a single port 6112.
* Host networking uses 27016 for Steam Master Server Browser.
* Host timeout (loss of connection to host) now 35 seconds by default (was 55).
* "Disconnected" message dialog now retained on screen for 4 mins before automatic dismissal (was 30 secs).

Steam Support
* Top Down Camera (camera view select 4) was previously bound to F12 by default which is normally used for Steam's screenshot feature. Camera View Select 4 now uses Shift+F12 by default to avoid potential clash.

Compatibility with FSX boxed
* FSX and FSX: Steam Edition co-Existence feature allows both versions to be installed on the same machine.

Default System-Setting Alterations
* Increased TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD to 4096 up from 1024
* Changed HIGHMEMFIX=1
* Increased Vertex and Index Buffers and the number of buffers.

Bugs Fixed
* Fix to particle emitter controllers which were not being updated properly.
* Fix to flush all levels of detail in terrain cache.
* Fix to Texture Composition preventing fail and crash.
* Fixed issue where player is able to reserve more slots for friends than maximum players allowed in the game.
* Fixed issue where invalid Briefing Room was presented to player when cancelling session creation.
* Fixed issue where weather text in the multiplayer briefing room is partially cut off.
* Fixed issue where no error message appears when attempting to host a session with the network adapter disabled.
* Fixed issue where there is no error message when attempting to host a session with the network cable unplugged.
* Fixed issue where host player is frozen after a collision occurs in multiplayer.
* Fixed issue where client gets dropped from a multiplayer game after they crash into the host.
* Fixed issue where the Host Options in multiplayer/ Free Flight allow a user to have a maximum of 99 player slots.
* UIAutomationCore.dll work-a-round is now supplied by default with FSX:SE. This fixes a number of crashes relating to UI interaction on 64-bit versions of Windows.
* Fixed issue where the application’s taskbar preview window displays no content on Windows 8 and above
* Prevent default colour mode for Windows 7 and above (enable automatic display composition).
* sserife.fon file now automatically supplied and loaded.

Why is it bad that two different platforms with separate issues, addons, configurations, etc are split into different categories? Having a separate one for FSX:SE makes just as much sense.

I don't know whether it is good or bad. However I see questions made in the Prepar3D forum repeated in the FSX forum. I look at it from a practical point of view. People will most likely not visit all forums. Like I for instance hardly visit the Prepar3D forum. Therefore knowledge which is available in other forum will not be used. Which I think is a pity.

Next to that I prefer to see us as a flightsim community and not as a community in which everybody has or needs his own part.

Just my two cents,
Huub

While I love seeing problems, tips, and fixes relegated to a sub-forum or a separate forum, since FSX and the new FSX:SE share the bulk of the exact same addons, my opinion is that there should be a main FSX 'all' forum. Perhaps 95% of the new release posts would be relevant to either version, after all.

Jimmy, I view a FSX-S subforum mainly as a place for posts about updates of Steam itself, especially when it relates to FSX-S (i.e. fixes to current addon conflicts, or new addons). NC
