C-97 BETA now available for download!

Thanks. Water injection: Note your 'Throttle' is bright, meaning it has been turned on previously (usually only for t/o and just a few minutes, to get the full 60' MAP). The preset Throttle 'to' does that for you, too, but you have to turn it off asap, via click on Throttle.

Pitot heat I will check.

Got the GPS back then?

Well this screenshot is just a compliment to everyone involved in the C-97. Think she looks a picture.

Then the stars came out.

GPS testing and addition being considered. Trying basic shockwave lights as well. CS Weather Radar works ok as an addon window and function.

Right now I'm just testing. To see how things will turn out with different kinds of lighting and specific textures. It is very promising. I have an idea for how to proceed and will post progress when it's made.

Stunning shine and weathering, Rick. Can we have a paintkit version of this?

Patch #1 is almost done, we just need to run some more tests on the smoke effect.

CTD
Q. I had a routine install up until it asked me to accept the first (I think) gauge. I must have done something wrong to this routine question, because I immediately had a CTD. Now I get a CTD every time I select the C-97. My problem is that I now don't know how to get back to that approval point again (removing the C-97 folder and installing again just gives me the same CTD when selecting the C-97). … by process of elimination I have discovered that the "fsx_event_logger.gau" is what got screwed up. If someone knows how to rectify my issue with it (in the "fsx.cfg" file entry?) please speak up. I merely removed mine to get the C-97 operable, but I'm sure this missing gauge now precludes a bunch of functionality.
The event logger gauge is purely for diagnostic purposes, and you can safely leave it deactivated. Indeed I believe the acceptance status of gauges is written into FSX.cfg, so that's a clue you might want to follow up. However, even refusing a gauge shouldn't lead to a CTD so perhaps there's more here than meets the eye. To de-activate, open panel.cfg and comment out the event logger gauge. In other words, like so:
//gauge01=fsx_event_logger!event_logger, 0,700,120,73
VC matters
Q. Altimeter not working?
Copy these lines to aircraft.cfg (thanks Marc) and press B in sim to update pressure setting (thanks falcon409). There will be a working pressure knob in Patch 1, Monitor > Flight > click 'Alt' will also set pressure.
[altimeters]
altimeter.0=1
altimeter.1=1
altimeter.2=1
altimeter.3=1
Q. Radio altimeter not working? Updated gauge in Patch 1.
Q. Overhead switches and gauges missing? Sorry, that is the current state of the VC. Atm many VC gauge functions have been delegated to the Monitor gauge.
Q. VC gauge and cockpit lighting missing, and a means of entering the ADF frequency. OK, noted. Cabin light switch (Monitor > Misc > Lights) in Patch 1.
Views
Q. Half the wings are invisible from the cockpit views. That's because they are 2D panel views of the exterior only, not proper VC views. The VC doesn't yet have any wingviews.

Operation
Q. How do I shut down all engines at the same time?
Any one of (1) Ctrl-Shift-F1; (2) mixture levers to cut-off; (3) Monitor (all engines selected) > Engines > Mix > red "x". To cut engines individually: Monitor > select engine # > Mix > red "x"
(Always re-select ALL engines after single engine ops: by hitting E, or clicking "Engines", or R-clicking any single engine.)
Q. Reverse props inop? Depends how you trigger it perhaps. Try Monitor > Engines > REV mid click to arm, then L-click REV or key Water Rudder. Should do the trick. Move throttle for speed control. Easily manages bends and corners, too! Personally, I have put water rudder on a joystick button and once REV is armed you are only a button press away from Reverse (even in the air, so watchit!)

Monitor Gauge
Q. Flight > Fuel/Weight not settable? Edit panel.cfg, [Window00] and un-comment gauge01=dsd_fsx_fuel_dump!fuel_dump, 2,2,2,2. Revised for Patch 1.
Q. De-icing in Monitor > Flight > OAT inop? Revised for Patch 1.
Q. One thing I encountered was a disconnect between the manual start and the combined throttles. When I attempted a manual start per checklist with engine 3, I got no response so I ended up starting the engines with Ctrl-E. Once back in the VC I wanted to taxi, but only had power to engine 3. I then realized (by the low manifold pressure) that I needed to manually start the remaining engines although the props were turning on all of them. Once I had all the engines powered up, my throttle only added power to one engine. I ended up reloading the aircraft to be able to move all four throttles with my single joystick throttle (hope that makes sense). Not sure what I'm saying here, but I guess it would be nice to have an additional gauge that would synchronize the throttles all four engines after a manual start??
Why, naturally. Click Monitor > Engines to re-select all of them , or R-click any single one. Check the engine numbers all turn bright. Just E on its own should also work.
Q. Shift+3 (Monitor Help) comes and goes fine when using the ? button in the top LH corner and once open, it will open and close fine with Shift+3. However.. if you close it with the ? then try and open it using shift+3.. it flashes briefly then disappears. Looking into it; use ? in Monitor for the time being.
Q. What does Shift-9 (mini Start panel) do?
Shift-9, the mini Start panel presents an inconspicuous single square button at bottom right of the screen. It allows you to execute the slow engine start routine without Monitor being open. See tooltip. Use E + 1, to select engine 1, then press five seconds. And so on, until all running. Then, importantly, hit E to re-select all engines before doing anything else.
Textures
Q. Regarding the texture bump map. would it be possible to add in the number 3 bump as a placeholder even if you don't create it yourself? That way someone could create one if they wanted to? A blank one essentially. I'll very likely do that for the next update.

When you open this zip you will see two folders: Boeing_C-97\ and Effects\

(1) Copy folder Boeing_C-97\ to Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\. This will update your current C-97 installation without changing aircraft.cfg or panel.cfg (see item 3 and 4 below). Accept replacing files when prompted, but use 'merge' or 'update' mode for folders.

(2) Copy folder Effects\ to Microsoft Flight Simulator X\. This will add one light effect file and two smoke effect files.

(3) Go to the Boeing_C-97 folder. If you have made any changes since the basepack release then backup your aircraft.cfg . Now rename aircraft.cfg-patch1 to aircraft.cfg, and merge any elements (such as added repaints/ fltsims) if necessary.

(4) Go to the Boeing_C-97\panel folder. If you have made any changes since the basepack release then backup your panel.cfg. Now rename panel.cfg-patch1 to panel.cfg, and merge any elements from the backup that you might have added in the meantime.

Hi Manfred:wavey:

One thing I've noticed.. I've used callouts for the first time (didn't try prior to patch-1) and note I get a decision height warning after take-off??

The shift+3 issued previously reported isn't mentioned in the patch-1 and still persists. Otherwise.. all appears to be ok thus far. I've tried cold start and shutdown using the monitor plus it's other panels (AP e t c).. all working as prescribed.

Manfred..

I've had another go at this this afternoon.. a nice little Culdrose to Gibraltar run at FL200/225kias.

Can't remember if this happened before but when you select the Speed placard, the Power placard flashes up briefly.. likewise, when you select the Power placard the Speed placard flashes up briefly. No big deal.

The radio section.
I'm not sure where you're going with this but all the radio's have a standby function in shift+4 but there are no entries in the cfg making them 'live' (standby are all at 0).

No matter what I did with Nav1.. the localizer always flags 'FROM'.. that or off if no freq is active.

On the subject of Nav's.. I was unable to get the AP to follow a selected nav frequency. The freqs were 'live' (most of them) making it possible to read a heading and enter that manually into HDG on the AP but I couldn't find a way to tune the radio and loc the AP to it. Didn't have the opportunity to try APPR on AP as Gib doesn't have ILS (not on my setup anyway)!! Selecting GPS had the aircraft starting a heavy RH turn.. where to I've no idea. NAV LOCK doesn't appear to do anything.

I think selecting Cruise on the engine panel (pre patch 1) set the mixture as well as the prop pitch. It doesn't do this now. MIX reads 100% unless set manually with the mouse. Middle=Best doesn't work on MIX either or if it does.. I've misunderstood it's function.

Still.. it was an interesting and enjoyable flight and who uses AP for landing anyway;)

I'd like to know if it is possible to activate Ted's smoke so that it stays on. It only smokes so long as I press the "I" key; when I let go, the smoke stops.

Throttles in sync

Some times, I find that I get into a situation where for some reason, one of the throttle levers will move and the other three will not. How can I resync them all without having to reload the aircraft.

attachment.php

Some times, only one throttle lever will move while the others are locked.

If you put your cursor over the 1234 numbers on the engine page then RIGHT click.. this will sync all the engines. Are you saying they're dropping out of sync?

Not sure, I was "monkeying" with some of the engine settings (SHIFT 4) (don't remember which) then when I went to take a peak at the throttles, I notice that only one (first one on the right) would move.
the others were unresponsive - even when I use my joystick throttle - had to reselect the same plane to get all the throttles to move. I know that was drastic but I did not know how to
correct the situation when three of the four throttles were locked.

Thanks.

The smoke system is operated by the engine MANIFOLD PRESSURE (inhg). Cruise smoke will be activated around 34 inhg to 36 inhg. Once it reaches 44 inhg to 46 inhg, darker smoke kicks in up to max power. As throttle are pulled back the reverse happens and below 34 inhg, there will be no smoke. Cruise setting should be about 40 inhg with light smoke.

I've circled the "Map" in red to check the readings as the smoke is activated. Each radial responds differently to the smoke effects.

Want to give a shout out to Bill Leaming (n4gix) for helping me solve a looping problem in the code.

Thanks Bill!

The reason I asked is because I might have seen this myself today. I'll check again asap:encouragement:

Thanks for the demo. I must not of installed the Patch1 correctly. The effects went to the effects folder. I am using the patch 1 aircraft.cfg and I've incorporated the new panel files.

I recreated the speed and other conditions including the MAP and unless I press the I key I don't see any smoke. Hummm......

Smoke effect

Judging from the video, the smoke is automatic when the speed and Map is per the video, but I get nothing.

I have some repaints added to the original aircraft.cfg that I copied and pasted to the patch1 aircraft.cfg then renamed it
same thing for the panel folder (CFG) I renamed the old one .bak and then renamed the new one (Patch1) to panel.cfg.

all the effects went to the EFFECTS folder and when I opened FSX it asked me if I accepted those new gauges, which I did
