Everyone's top three airfields and no.1 commuter flight?

heywooood

Mayor Emeritus of Taco City
I personally like FSX for GA flights primarily - and carrier traps secondarily...

I also tend to fly on the west coast of the North American continent (because I could only afford HD space for FTX's : CRM, NRM, PFJ, and NorCal areas and a handful of airfields) and FSADDON Tongass Fjords oh and Latin VFR KSAN

So anyway - the criteria for the list should be your top three best (or most frequently used) airstrips, taking into account detail, location, and FPS impact (low, hopefully)

mine are: CEJ4 Claresholm, KHQM Bowerman, 65s Boundary or Bonners Ferry - all are FTX (cant really say they are freeware because FTX regions, while not mandatory for these strips to work...are needed to make it all look good.)

I should say that the Bonners Ferry field in this case is NOT the addon but just the field the way it looks in FTX

My number one commute is 65s Bonners Ferry to KSZT Sandpoint with Bowerman to S45 Siletz Bay State or KONP Newport Muni. as a second choice (for longer flights)

These are my choices based on region, detail and FPS impact (nil) for the type of flying I like -
If you prefer commercial aviation, or Military or aerobatic or whatever please list your top three based on that - lets see how this shakes out

Pfffffff...add-on airfields.

Step 1: Find a paint of a 1980s operator of an aircraft I have installed
Step 2: Find a suitable flight here: http://www.departedflights.com/
Step 3: ???
Step 4: PROFIT (if the plane is adequately filled)

Or screw these steps and find out which airfield in FSEconomy happens to have suitable commuter aircraft available.

PGUM - Guam (both Andersen and Guam Intl airport) VFR Guam, updated, was just released recently. Very nice!

KNUW - NAS Whidbey Island, WA

and

KVQQ - NAS Cecil Field, FL

:encouragement: NC

When I first bought FS2004, my first flight was NAS Lemoore (KNLC) to NAWS China Lake (KNID). Because I planned it properly, like a real pilot would, I remember it. Take off from Lemoore, set your course for 094 degrees (do choose a plane with a working magnetic compass, *cough*). 116 NM later you will get to China Lake, provided you climb to 12,000 FT to clear the south end Mighty Sierra Nevada range. No nav aids at China Lake, but it's an easy VFR flight: when you clear the mountains and get to the desert, you're almost there. It's a flight that I've actually made, and covers familiar places. It's a fun "test flight" for me.

I'm always looking for airports that are fun to land at, due to the pretty scenery nearby. During one of our racing events, I landed at a beautiful spot on the coast of Borneo. Can't seem to find it now!

Neat idea. Doubt that I could filter down into three airports and one commuter flight though! :)

I tend to cycle through areas. I build up the add-on scenery to a decent point, and then just fly the region, airport to airport, with a small(ish) variety of aircraft.

Currently I have the area around LAX built up; Aerosoft Los Angeles X + MSE + Latin VFR KSNA + FTX KPSP + 29Palms KTNP gives me a very nice little hop route from KAVX all the way to KTNP that I've really been enjoying with GA, or in and around the LA helipads when I feel like that type of flying.

Previous to that, I was flying Hawaii for a few months. Mostly all annotated photoreal freeware, with George Keogh's wonderful freeware, plus the FSDT Hawaii packs gave me tons of variety; from nice little hops to small strips, to inter-island flights with bigger aircraft is so desired. The only thing I occasionally found, was that the prevailing winds, when flown with real world weather in ASN, weren't always conducive to a relaxing flight in smaller aircraft. I got used to landing my DA20 in some challenging crosswind scenarios that likely wouldn't of been advisable. :)

And previous to that, I had built up Scotland with the FTX region, plus pretty much all available payware for it. Again, it was hard to pick out one specific route or three specific airports that I enjoyed, more so since I was flying helicopters almost exclusively, but one of my favorites was centering in EGEO, and from there making trips to Stornoway, Barra, quick visits to some of the smaller island fields, or overland to Glasgow or Edinburgh. I also really enjoyed flying around the Sumburgh area as well. I only ended up moving to Hawaii since, well, flying real world weather in Scotland in the middle of winter was proving to be a bit of a hard sell in a helicopter. I recall one day trying to fly around Sumburgh in 30 knot winds... Not happening!

So, not three airports like you asked, but three areas, instead. Hope you don't mind!

i usually fly out of cytz and go to kilg, or phl, or bwi if i want a med length ga flight. if i want a long one, i'll go from n57 (new garden) and fly to tampa or naples

YMML ...cos it's 'just up the road'....and my father was an FSO grade 3 there since it opened. I was born in King Island while he 'ran' YKII. then we moved to YMIA so he could run that. We got around...;)

Sorry to go OT but that reminded me of a flight I tried several years ago, Scottish highlands in a Storch, at one point I was flying backwards such was the headwind. :biggrin-new:
Back OT I tend to do CYXX - CYQQ (Comox on the Island) - not too long and glorious scenery. Otherwise I like to sample my FTX sceneries heading South along the Pacific NW. Concrete being a favorite destination.
At the moment I am exploring the Rhine following it back to its source in my Carenado C152. Presently in Köln.

heywooood, I two would have a tough time picking three airports... and please, what is the blue and white Biplane aircaft the landing gear looks very rugged

Cool. gonna try that tonght in the Waco. :)

KHQM is a regular for me. But I also like to fly from KPWT Bremerton just because of its proximity to the Seattle area. 2S1 is also great to start out. I also use FTX and have all the North American regional sceneries except the most northern canadian ones.

KTGC, Gibson County Airport which is about 10 miles from my house. Small country airport with a good paved runway. I do most of my flight testing there and then head to either Memphis or Nashville to see how it flies cross country.

LSMI Interlaken in the Swiss Alps has been a favorite since CFS 1 days.

I kind of agree with the previous statements; I have favorite airfields in different parts of the world. Most of what I like is FTX/Orbx releases.

1) Milford Sound, NZ. I absolutely love this airport.
2) Queenstown, New Zealand. The commute between here and Milford Sound in a Cessna Caravan is a fun flight for me.
3) Sedona. Flying from here to their Palm Springs add on is a nice flight.
4) Broome, Australia.
4) Everything Orbx (Areas, airports, etc.) I really love a lot of the freeware airports in Western Australia that were released for FTX. I like anything exotic or in the middle of nowhere.

Military, I have to mention JD's NAS Fallon. One of my favorite military airports. If I could have Nellis and Homey AFB (Area-51 airfield) to the same LOD, that would be awesome.

Of course, give me a couple of hours and I'll have a completely different set of answers for you. ;)

Top three airfields (in no particular order):

1. Bergen Airport, Flesland, Norway. (Aerosoft)
2. Kapalua Airport, Hawaii. (freeware, G. Keogh)
3. Washington Dulles Intl, DC. (Flightbeam)

I have a connection to all three, and each have some great, unique traits about them that I enjoy. Bergen is the perfect size for me, not too big nor too small. The scenery (airport proper and surroundings) is amazing too. Kapalua is in a great spot in the middle of the Hawaiian islands and serves as a peaceful, beautifully located airport on Maui. Dulles is in the bustling metropolis of our nation's capitol and hosts numerous airlines from around the world, and is a great jumping off point for a variety of routes.

Routes vary enough that I can't say I have a #1 commuter flight at this time.

coolx2 - that is the GAS Great Lakes with tundra tires...

the pack includes a Ranger engined version - a Menasco motored model - and a Warner Powered Radial with cowl in two paints

Very Nice offering from Golden Age Simulations

friends, dont over think it - If you switch around in various regions just list the most recent favorite...otherwise - its your go to flight after a re-install or whenever you just want to be sure of a smooth flight (like you only have time today for one flight and you dont want

any stutters or pharts to harsh yer mellow)

and as far as your top three airfields - there is no wrong answer - just that in the scenario above where lets say you only have time for one or two hops, which airfields are you thinking of...?

Just thought it would be interesting to see what scenery folks are using and why...we always talk about planes here - what we fly more than where we fly

1: KDEN - KASE in a Baron or turbine Duke.
2: KDEN - KSLC in the PMDG 737NGX
3: Any Orbx airport in slow and low aircraft for a short hop.
4: Sorry, but can't forget this one: TNCM to surrounding airstrips like St Barth.

And I can mention several "challenging" airports I love to fly in to, and out of. That would probably be more for a separate thread, lol.

Yes, I like to challenge myself most of the time, and sometimes I just want to take something out of the hangar for a spin,

I need to look at KDEN-KSLC....

Now this might be a whole new separate thread: First FSX Flight EVER - was it the Demo for you? or did you come along after the release on disc?

Regarding your number 4: The first time I ever heard of MSFS was when I found the FSX Demo by accident way back when - I was mucking about on the 'net looking for flight sim websites for Olegs IL2 when I found a reference to this 'soon to be released' Microsoft thing...
I flew the Beech Baron from TNCM to TKPN at dusk - first flight in FSX ever...I was flat out gobsmacked.
I flew it free flight at twilight and I remember the stars sparkled through the broken clouds and the Beech gleamed like nothing in the sim world ever had before...
I think I burned a hole in that drive disc in about three days of simming.
the other flight on the demo I wore out was the canned CRJ landing challenge at PJ -
good times
