In memoriam - Raid on Port Darwin released!

Hey guys,

How do you erase objects embedded in the .bgl file? I am trying to create GSL scenery at Port Darwin for the airfield and the harbor, but I need to clear the deck in order to place things with historical accuracy.

The files I am referring to are in MaskRider's Australia package, which are non-GSL: http://mask-rider.net/MaskRider2008/resources/mr_australia.zip

Thanks in advance,

Hi Rami,

You would have to use SCASM or BGL analyze to decompile the BGL to SCASM.

Find and remove all unwanted objects and re-compile to BGL.

I looked at Darwin's BGL and it may not be too hard. Let me know if I can help.

Regards,

B24Guy

The B24 Guy,

Before I jump the gun, I sent a PM to MaskRider earlier this evening, asking him to view the thread, and I also sent him an e-mail yesterday. So let's give it twenty-four hours. :very_drunk:

I guess Talon never put up his Darwin GSL. He made it from Pics he got from Lindsay Watts.
A few pics of what he did. There is a lot more to his GSL not shown.

If you want I will ask Hiede if I can upload it.

The Bookie,

Please do. Or ask her if you can send it to me and I can include it in the Port Darwin raids I am working on as an homage to Al. :biggrin-new:

The Bookie,

That's great. MaskRider sent me a .bgl file with the airfield macros removed, and I just finished the airfield layout for it (at least as far as replacing the original objects) so it will be GSL.

Okay guys,

I'm going to send this off to kdriver and a couple of others for testing and tweaking, but for only my second airfield layout attempt, I'm not ashamed of this. I have to credit Shadow Wolf 07 for giving me a great tip for handling MaskRider's red fuel point...simply put the oil tanks there so you know where to go to refuel. You will see in one of the photos that I did just that.

Also, I hope to hear back from Hiede and The Bookie (kinda sounds like a sitcom title...lol) about using Talon's Port Darwin files as an homage. If not, I will put the macro-based MaskRider Port Darwin and use that as a template to make the GSL port.

Please feel free to offer any constructive criticism or compliments.

Also, thanks for all those who have helped thus far.

Good evening,

I finished the original layout of Darwin, based on the object-included .bgl file from MaskRider's original work. The .bgl file is clean, and the layout has been replicated, along with my modifications and enhancements to the Darwin airfield. :very_drunk:

Compliments only!

Looks great to me. Nice pics. I just love the P-40.

Rami,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but my monitor died and I just got a new one.

PM me your e-mail and I will send you the Darwin GSL plus the layout files for everything.

If you want I can send you the other GSL Talon did,Formosa,Manila and Dutch Harbor.

Darwin Done

Darwin's town and port scenery has been updated and the civil aerodrome at Parap has been added.

It should be coming soon.

Kevin,

I just uploaded the Talon ports package, and I will start work on the Darwin missions tonight.

This really caught me off-guard...

Hey guys,

I was always under the impression that the 10 USAAC aircraft that were in Darwin on 19 February, 1942 never got off the ground or were not serviceable.

Apparently, these ten P-40e fighters of the 33rd Pursuit Squadron took off at 0915 hours took off to follow a B-17 to Timor to reinforce resistance there. Encountering fog and bad weather, they turned back toward Darwin after just twenty minutes. Like Pearl Harbor, the initial report of planes reported heading toward Darwin was not taken seriously because they believed it was these planes returning.

When they reached Darwin, five landed to refuel, while the other five patrolled the harbor. It was these five which were airborne and jumped on by the Japanese when the first raiders arrived over Darwin.

Could anyone help me by please whipping up a quick 33rd Pursuit Squadron skin for the FDG2 P-40e that has the Pearl Harbor-era US symbol of the time?

I'd love to include this mission in the package. I already have one of the level-bombing missions completed!

Wayland,

I am just doing the raids on 19 February, 1942. There will be five Japanese missions...

1) Vals attacking from the Carrier Task Force. (Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, and the Akagi)

2) Kates attacking from the Carrier Task Force (Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu, and the Akagi)

3) Zeroes escorting the forces above. (This will also where you engage the patrolling P-40s)

4) G4M raid from Kendari.

5) G3M raid from Ambon-Laha.

And the P-40 patrol mission from the perspective of the USAAF.

Two landing grounds to the south of Darwin - Pell and Hughes - were named in honour of those two American pilots who lost their lives defending Darwin that day.

The nearby landing grounds of Livingstone and Strauss were also named after American pilots lost in April, 1942.

Darwin Raids

Rami, Oh, good. I was wondering if I needed a new hard drive for all 64 attacks from Feb '42 to Nov '43. That would have been over-egging the pudding a bit. I am really looking forward to this, as the Defense of Oz is my favorite early war campaign for the PTO. Steve

Wayland,

No delaying on this one. I'm working on the carrier task forces right now. I've already got the two high-level bombing missions completed except for the dynamic elements, which are ridiculously easy considering there are no enemy aircraft concerns.

"title_string"=Port Darwin - Nell
"summary_string"=Attention! The carrier raid has done heavy damage to the harbour facilities and shipping, so it is our turn! Your bombers, along with G4M bombers from Celebes, will hit the military and civilian airfields at Darwin, and make sure that this port cannot be used as a base of operations to interfere with our conquest of the Dutch East Indies!
"objective_string"=Following the carrier-based assault, twenty-seven G3M 'Nell' and twenty-seven G4M 'Betty' bombers arrived over Darwin just before noon & attacked the RAAF Darwin airbase along with the civilian airfield at Parap. Bombing from 5,500 meters, the Japanese raid inflicted heavy damage, especially on the RAAF aerodrome. There are no confirmed reports of any bombers being lost to anti-aircraft fire during this raid. After making their runs, the G3M bombers returned to Ambon-Laha, whilst the G4M Bettys returned to Kendari on Celebes.
"intelligence_string"=Reports from the successful carrier raid indicates that all RAAF and USAAC fighters were destroyed on the ground and in the air by our friends. This means that you should have the skies to yourself. Make sure to hold 5,500 meters over the target to avoid anti-aircraft fire. Concentrate on pounding fuel stores, exposed aircraft, or storage hangars. Once finished, return to Ambon-Laha. Banzai!
