Hungarian 190’

JensOle

SOH-CM-2023
During my active years in the military, I had the pleasure to work 5 years in a NATO unit based in Hungary. A great period which also got me interested in the history of the Hungarian Air Force.

Without getting into details, the Hungarians choose the Axis side during w.w.2. From the sources I have read, the Germans were not to impressed with their combat capabilities, but never the less, the small Hungarian Air Force managed to prove themselves to some extend during the closing years of the war during the desperate fighting to stop both the US heavy bombing raids and the massive Soviet push into Hungary. Quite a large numbers of Hungarian pilots made aces during the final phase of the war.

The classic hangar FW-190 series are, even if they are some years old now, some of the best FSX warbirds you can get. And in my eyes, a nice break from flying the many Mustang and Spitfire models. The F-8 is not included to my knowledge, but the very similar A-8/A-9 are and I have used the later as a stand in for a repaint of a Hungarian FW-190F-8 of the 102/1 Vadaszbombazo szazad, as it looked in early 1945. The Hungarians used as the Luftwaffe, the FW-190F-8 as the standard fighter bomber when the Stuka proved to vulnerable.

Note: After I took the screenshots I also found out I can change the drop tank for a bomb to even better simulate the F-8..

The painting of German w.w.2 aircraft is not my strongest sides, any advices for getting the scheme as realistic as possible?

Not your strong point ? That stuff looks pretty awesome for me :dizzy:
I especially like the rendering of the tricolor rudder, which almost looks photorealistic. The rest of the repaint is quite nice as well, but I can't comment on the historical acuracy at all, because I have no idea.

Thanks!

The Hungarian FW-190s are a bit more difficult to research than the Bf-109G's which there are a lot of pictures of.

Right now I'm trying to find out where the 102/1 were flying from in the winter of 44-45. Not much info to find, but I believe they initially was based at Varpalota airfield (close to the Bf-109Gs which were flying out of Veszprem), south west of Budapest. More interestingly, sources states that the unit at some point moved to an airfield at the village at Kemenesszentpeter. This village is close to where I lived in Hungary and actually on one of my old bike ride routes! I have never heard or seen anything of this airfield, and as it is pretty close to the much larger airfield at Papa (which also was a major base during the war), it was most likely a field base. Not by any chance anyone with more info about this subject here at the SoH?..

Hi Jens-Ole,

I prefer the jet-age, so I'm not up-to-date with the hungarian WWII aircrafts and units, but I can reach hungarian sources easier, I think. ;) So that small airfield near Kemenesszentpéter is "Kenyeri". It's more like a field, than an airfield, because it was grassy and without "serious" buildings. It was used for training with MiG-21's too, but now it's abandoned and ruined.

BTW, I found some pics about the 201/1 FW's, but as I remember, photos exists about these planes in black&white.

Very interesting video! Thanks for sharing! As I mentioned, I know these villages very well after having been cycling all over this part of Hungary with my road bike during my 5 years in Papa. I have been past Kenyeri many times :) I never know they used it as a fieldstrip for the Mig-21s from Papa though! There is a preserved Mig-21Bis in the village of Magyargencs close bye. I always found it a bit odd to have a 21' in a small village museum, but now I know this area had been used for flying back in the Mig days.

The FW190F is close to finished, a few small changes compared to the shots; changed the font of the "W" and added the underwing yellow "V" IFF marking. I'll release it if anybody wants it.

You're wellcome, anytime - in Hungary too. ;) And thank you for the hungarian repaint, it's awesome!

Hi

I'll be back to Hungary for sure, my 2nd home country :) Beside the bike rides, I got very well known around in the Bakony region on long hiking trips. Long warm summers (Balaton!), friendly people and good food :)

I have got some new information about the Hungarian FW 190F-8s and are making another paint. "White 64" of 102/2 squadron as it looked in early 1945. This paint scheme is itself non standard with both the camouflage and the tail assembly which is probably made by a sub contractor/or repaired with a tail from another aircraft. By this stage in the war aircraft entered Hungarian service without removing the German cross and swastika (low vis model). 64 is in a non standard font and the girl name Ági is painted on the MG cowling.

pr945b; BTW - I have also made a large Hungarian Mig-21 paint pack and Mig-15 repaints if you have not already seen them.

Those are great looking texture sets Jens-Ole. Have inspired me to reinstall my Classic Hangar FW-190.

And pr945b, thanks for the video. You rarely see jets operating out of grass fields anymore but rough field operations was always one of the design criteria.

Thanks!

Yes, the Classic Hangar 190 still holds up great to todays standard and are great representations of the German 190 series. And some interesting take off and landing characteristics..

Another F-8 flying over Hungary during the last war winter; this time a genuine Luftwaffe machine from SG 2 flying out of Varpalotta airfield together with the Hungarian FW 190 wing.

My first try with German winter camouflage.. rather difficult to get to look right. Very much wip.
