Funny, I've heard a lot of people say that and I've read a few accounts of him being rude. However, when I met the man he was nothing but nice and very cool to our group. So the only thing I have to go on is my personal experience which was a good one

Jan, im glad to read you had a good experience with him,my dad and i were having lunch with bud anderson one day at the airport in auburn and he came in,remember he and bud were best friends for many years,they greeted eachother very nicely,and he sat..then asked my dad and i to leave.i looked at bud and he told yeager we were his friends and we were waiting for our lunches.then he had other not so nice things to say.the only reason he even spoke to bud was because his new wife wasnt with him.

this also makes me wonder if you are in northern california?...im just curious.lol.
