FTX Southern California very soon

Hmm. Maybe also for those who remember visiting years ago, but I may have to add N Cal for the full memory trip! :dizzy:

There is for sure a difference in color rendering in P3D HDR and FSX (as well as a different overall contrast curve). I'm having a hard time believing it will look closer to correct color balance in FSX although it may be better.

Here is one of Orbx's shots and the same patch of earth in Google maps. Google maps is not always correctly color balanced but in this case, it is very close. You can tell by the neutral white highlights and the neutral edges around the shadows. Note the green edge of the tidal waves in Orbx compared to the neutral gray/white of the Google image.

(Full disclosure: I worked for 20 years in aerial photography, photogrammetry and remote sensing. About 200 hours as camera man and mission specialist in the aircraft. About 5 years directly working in the darkroom/photo production side of the house.)

I just purchased their Palm Springs Airport and it is nice. I did not opt for the FTX global and as a result, the surrounding houses, trees and what not that are off the reservation of the airport looks
flat and looks like a checker board. I did manage a workaround that allows some of that flat texture to look llke it is suppose to. I went here http://www.blueskyscenery.com/AZ_NorthWest7.html
and got their scenery only and injected some of the scenery files into the Palm Springs and most of the trees and buildings now appear.

As and aside, I wonder if this new FTX Southern Cal would complement the Palm Springs scenery like the FTX global would. I really do not want my complete scenery folder replace with the
FTX Global and I just don't trust it to not somehow to screw up my FSX installation and cause me grief. So if the FTX SoCal would be a viable substitute for those Orbx sceneries then I may
be all in for that.

I hope it will be as frame friendly as all the rest of their Western US territories - this is my home turf and I am excited about having it in FTX splendor

If the outline on the KMZ file is correct you will be getting a little of southern Nevada, western Arizona and northern Baja also.
For that matter, looking at the Orbx site you could make quite an adventure flying from Baja California along the Pacific coast all the way past Anchorage with some stops in the American and Canadian Rockies if you wish.

It only drops into Mexico about 12 miles on the ocean side, about 25 miles on the Arizona side. Not much of Baja, but it certainly will make a trip adventurous now! I'm not quite ready to hit REFRESH yet to see if it is available, but it's close!

It looks outstanding but I wonder what the VAS consumption will be? I manage some of the large scenery & photoreal areas pretty well with my high end addons but every now & then, I'll get the dreaded OOM when the VAS is topped out.

Looks nice however, I just purchased Latin Vfr San Diego w/ Expansion pack and I wonder if I'd be wasting $$$ if this scenery would cover the San Diego Area (airport)
If they do cover the KSAN area, I'd have to remove what I just purchased. I would think that they would make a backup of the original scenery in case you had to revert
to what you had before installation.

here is part of what they claim they cover:

Downtown San Diego has been upgraded with 17 landmark buildings and custom models of other important structures throughout FTX SCA include the Hoover Dam east of Las Vegas

Hummm.....

FSX, DX10, Shade. FPS around the complex cities for me was ~14 - 20 VAS around 900,000 holding steady around that number so no OOM so far. It looks good, but that $50 bucks could have gone toward P3D v.3 me thinks instead. Or maybe even Project Cars! But since I'm very much invested in FSX, and have NorCal, I decided to go with it. I think they could have blended Edwards AFB better and quite honestly, Blue Sky Scenery freeware has better desert representation that blends even better now with SoCal than with Global.

Here's a look back at Coronado island toward San Diego in FSX.

It looks quite nice, but a small point the area in the fore ground is the salt ponds and bird sanctuary in south San Diego bay, Coronado and downtown are at the distant top center.

If I understand you correctly .....Orbx has multiple installers . No need to repurchase scenery if you change to P3D or have both ( fsx and P3D)
