• There seems to be an up tick in Political commentary in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site we know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religiours commentary out of the fourms.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politicion will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment amoung members. It is a poison to the community. We apprciate compliance with the rules.

Another 2 paints for Nigel's Avro Tutor.

Both of these are representative 'best guess' of the time paints, but were actually assigned to these units as far as I can find out.

K3215 (better known today as the last surviving Avro Tutor G-AHSA/ K3241 in CFS aerobatic team colours) recorded as being allocated to 61 OTU in 1942 , possibly assigned to 'Q' Flight (an independant flight parented by 61 OTU) in 1943 to assist with making a film about the RAF participation in Greece in 1941.

'Q' flight is known to have Gloster Gladiators and a sole Wellington (or Blenheim according to whichever source you read) and Tutor (again, depending on source)

61 OTU was formed at Heston in 1941; when part of 53 OTU was separated , with 53 OTU going to Llandow, South Wales, where, incidentally the poem High Flight was penned , 61 OTU had to wait until Rednal was ready before moving in, in 1942.

K8170 recorded as being allocated to 2 Air Gunners School at RAF Dalcross (now Inverness Airport) 1942-43
2 Air Gunners School arrived at Dalcross 5 July 1941, In 1942 Miles Martinet and Westland Lysander, Boulton Paul Defiants and 14 Avro Tutor aircraft (these being K3273, K3387, K3397, K3408, K3466, K4817, K6089, K6102, K6104, K6107, K6113, K6124, K6924 & K8170 ) are recorded as resident at 2 Air Gunners School, here is K8170 in typical marks of the time.

It's possible that these Tutors had the 3rd cockpit re-activated complete with Lewis Gun and Scarff ring; same as the later model 626 (all the later Lynx engined RAF Tutors were completed with the 3rd cockpit, but usually flew with it faired over) for Air Gunner training or were used for the Air to Air photography element of the course (all Air Gunners were initially trained in target acquisition using film cameras, only later in the course moving to first, blank ammo, then live ammo on targets)
