This 376th BG Liberando was flown by 1Lt John Palm and his crew to Ploesti on 1 Aug 1943. Having realized the command ship had made a wrong turn, Palm broke away from the formation and made directly for the refineries by himself. Badly battered by ground defenses, it was finally brought down by Hauptmann Wilhelm Steinmann of 1/JG4. Palm and his crew had the distinction of being the first Liberator downed by the defending forces.
