From June 1943 to May 1945, 564th, 565th, 566th and 567th Bombardment Squadrons of the 389th Bombardment Group (Heavy) 'The Sky Scorpions' with B-24 Liberators were stationed at Hethel. They were twice detached to North Africa in 1943. The first mission was flown from Hethel on the 9th of July 1943. The 389th Bombardment Group completed 321 missions including 14 from North Africa.
