In August 1942, No. 10 Squadron (RAAF) was transferred to Melbourne from Leeming, which was about to be turned over to the new Canadian group, despite the fact that the airfield still lacked some facilities, which were not completed until well into the winter of 1942-43. No. 10 was the only bomber squadron to be based at Melbourne and while it was in residence, the squadron lost over 100 Halifaxes in 300 raids. Its last bombing sorties were flown on April 25, 1945.
