RAF Fiskerton opened in Jan 1943 as a satellite to RAF Scampton. The Peenemunde raid was launched from Fiskerton. Operation HYDRA, the Peenemunde Raid, was launched on 17 Aug 1943. JA691, a Fiskterton-based Lancaster, was among the bomber aircraft involved and an extremely detailed account of the attack and JA691's crew's fate is on BomberHistory.co.uk. 576 Sqn's last combat sortie from the airfield was to participate in the attack on Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. RAF Fiskerton was one of 15 airfields to be equipped with a FIDO fog dispersing equipment. During runway repairs carried out in Sep and Oct 1944, the opportunity was taken to install the system. Later RAF Fiskerton was home to a Royal Observer Corps No 15 Group HQ and UKWMO Midlands Sector HQ from 1960 to 1992. Hope you enjoy this one! Cees
