From 1939 to 1943 Watton was used by the RAF as a light bomber airfield. From 1943 to July 1945, the 2nd Air Division was placed in the 3rd Strategic Air Depot in the adjacent Neaton, servicing and repairing B-24 Liberators. From April 1944 to July 1945 Watton housed the 802nd Reconnaissance Group (Provisional), a weather photo recon unit that operated over the Atlantic Ocean and later by day and night over enemy occupied territory. From 9 August 1944, this was renamed as the 25th Bombardment Group (Recon) with B-17, B-24 and Mosquito's of the 652nd BS (H), 653rd BS (L) and 654th BS (P). The 25th BG (R) flew a total of 3,370 sorties for the loss of 15 aircraft. Enjoy. Cees Donker
