Dooleybird for Warwick Carter's P51

Dooleybird for Warwick Carter's P51 2024-07-03

This file contains alternative textures for the V.2 version of the civil P51 Mustang by Warwick Carter. There are several versions of Warwick Carter's P51. These textures are done for and test on the last version of this model.

The textures depict the aircraft the Mustang IV "Dooleybird" flown by Flight Lieutenant Arthur "Joe" Doley of 19 Squadron. It is most probably the most famous P51 in RAF service. Funny as the aircraft only became famous when it was released as a 1:72 scale plastic model kit by Matchbox. There are several differnt profiles of aircraft all based on the same two Black and White pictures in Arthur Doley's logbook. I have chosen the proposed scheme of the Matchbox kit.
The Mustang was the only RAF single-engine fighter with the range to escort Mosquitoes and Beaufighters from Scotland to Norway on anti-shipping strikes. During the Winter/Spring of 1945, Flight Lieutenant Doley's log books record 12 such sorties over the North Sea, each lasting up to five and a quarter hours.
Flight Lieutenant Doley flew the QV-V KM272 quite regularly between May 1945 and January 1946.

I want to thank the Warwick Carter for creating this beautiful model and Martin Wright for creating his wonderful DXT1 bitmap manipulator tool. These textures are based on the basic paintkit done by Garry J. Smith.

Enjoy
