The German High Command just had to have a Triplane. They had captured a complete example of the Sopwith Triplane,and were very impressed.From all the subsequent designs which were tested, only the Pfalz Dr1, and the Fokker Dr1 were chosen for production,and in the case of the Pfalz,a production run of only 10 machines for combat evaluation was ordered. But the Fokker Dr1 Triplane was obviously a very good aircraft,both in looks,design,construction and performance.Large orders were placed and although there were early teething troubles,mainly due to sloppy production, it soon became the mount of the Aces. Manfred Von Richthofen made the aircraft immortal,and to use his own words,he wrote, "It climbed like a monkey and maneuvered like the devil" And so the legend of the Red Baron was born,and internet is literally packed with information, stories,and pictures about the man,the mystery of his death,and,of course,the Fokker Dr1 Triplane.Look them up ! I have enjoyed making my "Triology of Triplanes",that is,the 3 fighter triplanes which achieved production status during World War 1. The all-red Fokker Triplane and the Red Baron have remained to this day,symbolic of a kind of chivalry,which transcended boundaries,and to which we may even now, learn a lesson from.Mortal struggle in defence of your national heritage.and finally laying down your life to it's cause,could be differently construed by todays standards.
