Col Robert L. Scott flew cargo (C-46) for the Flying Tigers and when disbanded he tried out for fighters and passed with flying colors, even though he was old by fighter pilot standards at the time (34). He quickly became CO of the 23rd Fighter Group in China and amassed 23 air victories during his service with the 23rd. Not bad for an old man!The book "God Is My Co-pilot" is his autobiography and a good movie was based on the book and really not bad for the period.
