On 22 May 1955,the first Italian-built North American (FIAT) F-86K took to the skies over Turin. It was the export version of the single-engined all-weather interceptor fighter, the F-86D, over 2,500 of which were produced. The FIAT factories produced under license all the 221 F-86Ks except for a first batch of two prototypes and 120 aircraft assembled in the US. Sixty-three FIAT F-86K all weather fighters entered service with the Italian Air Force from 1955. Further F-86Ks came from France and the Netherlands making a total of 93 in the Italian Air Force. The “Kappone” (Big K),as it was quickly nicknamed, \was the first all weather fighter used by Italy. It was assigned to the 1st Stormo (Istrana AB/Pisa AB). Later the F-86Ks were also operated by the 51st Stormo IIstrana AB) and for a short period also by the 4th Aerobrigata (Grosseto AB) which passed them on to the newly-formed 36th Stormo, based at Gioia del Colle AB (Bari) when it started to receive the first F-104G Starfighters. Later the 5th Stormo based in Rimini AB working with the 23rd Group used the “Kappone” until 1973 when,as in the case of other units, it was gradually replaced by Aeritalia's F-104S Starfighter. As an interceptor, the F-86K could almost reach supersonic speeds and in fact it could break the sound barrier in nose-dive. It was the first Italian fighter to be equipped with AIM-9B Sidewinder infrared air-to-air missiles.
