P-51D 44-63733 was assigned to Major Paul W. Imig of the 72nd FS/21st FG. Paul Imig was an old-timer, having defended Canton Island with P-39's in 1942. He was then posted to Australia, where he offered to take a demotion if they gave him a combat assignment. Instead, he was given command of the 72nd FS, which he led to Iwo Jima. After three years overseas, he flew several combat missions over Japan before returning to the US. His aircraft was named after the woman who was to become his wife, and went on to fly 26 VLR missions with just one abort, thus compiling the best service record in the squadron.
