P-51D 44-63975 was assigned to 1Lt Clarence H.'Bud' Bell of the 72nd FS/21st FG. Fertile Myrtle with its pilot completed 5 VLR missions and aborted 3 before being shot down on 1 July 1945 on a fighter sweep over Tokorozawa airfield. Hit by flak at 10.000 ft, Lt. Bell continued his strafing run before his engine failed, forcing him to bail out over Sagami Bay. He was captured and spent de rest of the war in a PoW camp.
