Most of the 240 Thunderbolt Is and approximately 600 Thunderbolt IIs supplied to the RAF through Lend-Lease arrangements in 1944-45 were shipped directly to India, where the type entered service in August 1944. Replacing Hurricanes in a dozen squadrons, the Thunderbolt saw extensive action over Burma in the final stages of the war. All replacement pilots for the Thunderbolt squadrons on active service were trained by No 73 OTU at Fayid in the Suez Canal Zone, Egypt, the aircraft of this unit sporting a distinctive "Skull-in-Ace-of-Spades" marking.
