10 years ago today

Yes. There was FOD on the runway and one of the main tires hit it sending a piece of the tire up to hit the wing. There was damage to the wiring to the landing gear and the impact shockwave through the fuel ruptured one of the fuel tanks. Apparently an electrical arc from the dammaged wiring started the fire when the crew tried to retract the landing gear. The fire rapidly destroyed the left wing.
 
Really doesn't seem like that long ago.... Feels more like 5 years rather than 10. What a tragedy.

Astonishingly, the French trial of Continental and employees only got underway this year.
The defence lawyers have shown that there were several contributory factors to the crash.
The metal strip that fell off the Continental flight may or may not have had any impact on the outcome.
That flight should never have taken off.

A tragic end to the era of supersonic passenger transport.
 
Yes I meant Concorde AF 4590 - all sorts of issues, LG bush not in place, overweight and cg out of limits etc etc
Co-incidentally, France was nearly sans president that day too.
Jacques Chirac's 747 jet was taxiing in as Concorde took off.

A tragic accident no doubt, but I didn't realize that they were putting any Continental employees on trial. How could they be held responsible for this?
 
The French legal system is a little "different" and requires automatic investigation and prosecution by the presiding magistrate, where there is loss of life.
They are starting (after 10 years!) with the first possible culpability: Continental.
Once they have chewed the cud about that bit of metal, they may (or may not) move on to AF. Reparations of around $1m per family have meantime been paid out.
