16gb vs 8gb RAM

HI,

Is it worth buying 16gb Ram or 8GB, im building a computer this weekend and just want to know if its worth investing in 16GB ram

Go for 16 .... the more the better, particularly if you ever intend to run Virtual Machines.
However, if you are hoping for better performance for FSX with the 16 you'll be disappointed - there will be no difference...;)
 
well... here in New Zealand 8gb g.skill ripjaws 1600mhz is $113NZD and 16Gb g.skill ripjaws 1600MHZ $200NZD?

Still worth you think?
 
If your budget will go to include the 16 go for it...

Also with RAM be careful to get what your Board will work with, for instance my Asus Rampage IV Formula is quad channeled so I have to get quad channel kits, however some kits are two duel kits together...

Also id check the QVL just to be on the safe side...

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
RAM is probably the cheapest investment toward future upgrades.
But yes, ONLY works effectively if you run a 64bit OS.

I will be installing on a 64bit OS

One more question, is Windows OEM only one user?

Im running 2x8 (two channel) on a Asus P8Z77-V-LX
 
A 32-bit hardware (CPU with 32-bit registers) or 32-bit software can use at most 2^32 bytes = 4 GB memory in theory. FSX is a 32-bit software. In a 32-bit OS FSX can use at most 2 GB by default and 3 GB by tweaking (the OS needs it's part too to function).

I can't recommend byuing any 32-bit OS because even 32-bit software like FSX benefits by 64-bit OS as being able use more than 3 GB memory (system can take it's own part from that going over the 32-bit's 4 GB barrier). I think there isn't any new 32-bit PC on the market anymore so buying such one is a theoretical possibility.

So by as much memory as you can afford. 8 GB is enough for FSX but some 64-bit software can use the 16 GB which I think is enough almost for any purposes at the moment (but not in the further future for sure ;)). 32-bit is past, 64-bit is present and future.

About OEM versions of Windows:

- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on

- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system
 
I didn't bother mentioning 64bit OS as if it were 32 then 8 or 16 gig would mean diddly-squat ....both are equally meaningless...so if the OP was asking 8 or 16 then it was reasonable to assume he was going 64bit in the first place...;)
 
Keep in mind, which version of each windows version also dictates how much physical memory the OS will see, 64 bit or not. Win 7, you will need the Home premium to use 16 gig and Professional or higher to use more. Similar with Win Vista.

Hopefully, if dad comes home early we will be going to pick up the parts

I fly on a Laptop and barely get 20FPS and this will be a big step up!
