2010 brings major transformation to Basic Combat Training

Lemme see if I got this already...

Shoot (Pull Trigger)
Pull (Pull the charging handle)
Observe (Check the chamber to see it's clear)
Release (Release charging handle)
Tap (Hit the forward assist)
Shoot (Pull Trigger)

Actually I'm wrong....

It's SLAP (the bottom of the magazine)
Pull
Observe
Release
Tap
Shoot....

You are also authorized to add an S before the Slap (S**t!).

That's what the concept of "citizens in uniform" is all about.

Also, as I said, it's a great recruitment tool. Way better than those booths screaming "We're the Army, we ROCK!" all over the place. :d

But....we are the Army, and we do ROCK!!

Then throw crappy rifle over the hill,at least in the 70's.I'm not trying to start a fight here but I hate the M-16,I would rather throw stones then carry that pos.Now this again is referring to my experience in the 70's and later in the 90's hanging out with a class 3 dealer who loved the damn things.

Good thing he loved to work on them also, because he did that a lot.Meanwhile my M1A,Mak 90,FN-49 and FN Fal kept on gettin' it no matter what I did to them.:d

I entered basic on July 8th 1974....old as dirt.

This is what I'd like to carry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_&_Koch_HK416
The HK416 uses a proprietary gas system derived from the HK G36, replacing the direct impingement gas system used by the standard M16/M4. The HK system uses a short-stroke piston driving an operating rod to force the bolt carrier to the rear. This design prevents combustion gases from entering the weapon’s interior, a shortcoming with direct impingement systems. The reduction in heat and fouling of the bolt carrier group increases the reliability of the weapon and extends the interval between stoppages. It also reduces operator cleaning time and stress on critical components. The SA80 bull-pup assault rifle used this system long before the HK G36 was developed. According to H&K "experience that Heckler & Koch gained during its highly successful 'midlife improvement programme' for the British Army SA80 assault rifle, have now borne fruit in the HK416.".[2]

</sup>
The HK416 is equipped with a proprietary accessory rail forearm with MIL-STD-1913 rails on all four sides. This allows most current accessories, used on M4/M16-type weapons, to be fitted to the HK416. The HK416 rail forearm can be installed and removed without tools by using the bolt locking lug as the screwdriver. The rail forearm is 'free-floating' and does not contact the barrel, improving accuracy.
The HK416's barrel is cold hammer-forged with a 20,000 round service life and features a 6 grooves 178 mm (7 in) right hand twist. The cold hammer-forging process provides a stronger barrel for greater safety in case of an obstructed bore or for extended firing sessions. This includes "OTB" (Over-the-beach) capability; the HK416 can be safely fired after being submerged in water and not completely drained.[3]

The fact that we (DoD) are using a weapon that's been in service for around 50 years when there are many other designs out there that are better, more reliable, easier to service and, in the right numbers, cheaper to purchase is beyond me.

It even comes in a 7.62mm version - the HK 417.

Basic training with the M-16,1974.

A) run down firing range with M-16 rifle and jump into muddy foxhole.

B) Emerge from said foxhole with the M-16 club, jammed and useless.

C) Be glad this is training and not the real thing, you would be SOL otherwise.:d
