• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

2010, The Odyssee continues

Sad thing is the brains and technology are available for such projects and any shortfall in technology highly likely to be resolved by the brains.

What is lacking is money. Space exploration is too expensive and not of sufficient priority. There are far too many problems here on Earth to solve first.

There will be massive changes in the next 40 years. We are still in the early days of the Information Age, we have yet to see most of the effects. Many businesses will finally realize that they can save money by not having workers onsite, it might even be possible to 'work' hundreds or thousands of miles from home... without leaving your house. The average city has a downtown core just filled with office workers working on computers... folks that can work from anywhere. Think of all the traffic that can be avoided, all the polution... and all the savings from reduced traffic, reduced facility costs.

Telepresence will make major changes, most we can't even yet fathom.

i really expected this to catch on faster than it seems to be so far, but basically i think you're right. of course there are some exceptions, like the blue collar sector, for example. much of what is done by them requires their presence on-site, and usually there are certain office personell that should be there as well for speed and convienience.

By the way there's pretty awesome looking flick "Moon" made this year. It has received rave reviews. It definitely has that chilly 2001 feel about it.

Eeeeks.. That does look like a good one!

Thanks for the heads up Pekka.

Supposedly, according to bush, we have already started on plans for a military installation on the Southern poll of the Moon. I am sure that is postponed now, but who knows...

LH,
I didn't mean to pick on just your spelling, and no one else's , but you do come up with some zingers!
Space exploration needs to advance the one area that has stayed the same since the 1940's: PROPULSION. We're not going to get far with the same ol' LOX and Hydrogen brew.:pop4:

They say the new B2 flying wing has a mild 'gas/magneto drive' hybrid propulsion in its wings. Something to do with magnetics and laminar airflow over the wings.

It 'might' be something of a 'pulling' system that lowers use of the jet engines. I dont even know if its true. Just something that came out when it was going to England for an airshow a while back.

We are, I think, due to get out of the old rocket age. I still cant believe a huge group like Boeing (I think it was Boeing) that came up with a Mars lander that is a verticle rocket. Crazy..... (Yankee Clipper?)
