2012 Around-The-World Race PIREPS & Screenshots

Assorted screenies from yesterdays action.

-Gaggle of Mooneys across India on the team night flight.

-Waiting on deck in Hong Kong for MaddogK and Fliger747 to bring in the heavies on Rwy 13.

-On final in the 777-300 as Dave and Tako_Kichi blast off on their formation flight.

-On my way to Australia in the Tigercat.

South Pole airfield (NZSP) is on a hill, but the runway strip is entirely unsuitable for landing anything other than a helicopter. So instead we found a nice strip of hard-pack snow just beside the runway, and used that for arrivals and departures. The trick here was not to let the aircraft drop into the many crevasses in this area. The other challenge (for inbound aircraft) was height perception, as there is just nothing here but miles and miles of snow and ice.

A pair of three-holers waiting to depart the South Pole, as Dave successfully brings in the baton in the Mustang.

Here's a Kodak I grabbed last night during our formation flight over the Philippine Islands. The leg distance was 407.3 Nm and the time difference between the pilots from take-off to landing was just 1 second!

I got the wildcard leg out of the South Pole, and the planning we'd done as a team worked out great. Departure off the snow-pack parallel to Runway 20, then a left turn and fly all the way round the pole in a big right hand arc to properly cover the required degrees of longitude before heading off to the other end of Antartica. GPS and compass don't really work this close to the pole, so Larry did a great job as air traffic controller keeping me on track, and getting CrashAZ out of the "vortex" that happens when you get too close to South 90.

I'd practiced shooting night approaches into SAWB, but in the end the sun was still just up as I got there, so no problem finding the gravel strip. Here's the pair of 727s parked up for the evening (nice job by CrashAZ as wingman).

And I thought I was loopey this morning, after going into work I'm almost too tired to post pics BUT I can't let a good tragedy go to waste, I took some nice shots enroute to McMurdo:

i thought that you might like to see this,
hot off the press, from a spectator's pov.

it's a few seconds after the hand off at SAWH.
that's Dave rolling with the baton.
to the far right, Tom is on sort final,
Larry, as wingman, is starting to roll,
Taco is sitting on the tarmac watching it all unfold.
and finally, there's Kevin to the left of Dave,
sitting on the runway, after handing off the baton.

it was poetry in motion and great fun to watch.
well done, Team Outhouse.
simply...FANTASTIC!!!

___________:kilroy:__________
the turn for the Antarctica was a total surprise.
i kept watching Mike, wondering if he turned
the wrong direction and dozed off.
guttsy move there fellas.
i love it!

A few more Kodaks from the trip.

1. Me and Moses with a couple 777s sitting in the Phillipines (RPVB) awaiting baton transfer.

2. Leaving the RPVB in the big bird. Time to find a quick snack.

3. Mmmmm...How bout a little snack of fresh, tender Cubby!

Some more in-flight entertainment from the Who's Where map. Stonec0ld making crop circles somewhere in Australia. :salute:

Hey...ya gotta do something to while away those long hours in the cockpit besides .

More shots from the big bird. So how'd I get roped into flying this hair-dryer anyway?!?!?

1. Antarctic Sunrise on the way to McMurdo Station.

2. Pucker factor diminishing. Safe on the ground (erm...ice) at McMurdo Station.

Back in the european theatre of operations...
A team flight of P-38s heading to Italy.

1. SrGalahad's Photo Lightning getting it picture taken.

2. Sneaking up on Fliger's 4 o'clock.

And I can't help but post this lawn-dart shot. My apologies Crash!
Sure wish I could've FRAPs'd it though. That was the purtiest wing-over into the ground that I've seen in a long time!

Flying out of SBCY towards SBPV, leaving the darkness behind for probably the last time:

Another uneventful flight for me, from SBTT to SKCL. Here's Flying Bull landing the Sea Fury at SKCL:

Waiting on the ground at MMHO, Fliger found himself an interesting parking spot... :
