I don't get any problems launching off the cat with the Corsair either. I had problems trying a free take off but that's probably because there was only 6kts of wind over the deck!
Free take-off with the Swordfish is another matter, you wonder if the ship's going to overtake!

A short message as I'm at work...

I'm guessing I could launch at idle in the way you describe above, then power up as I come off the deck. This could be a work-around, but I'd rather launch under power. In one of your posts above you mention powering up to 100% for a minute or more whilst still on the cat, but there is little chance of that in my case.

I think the next thing I'll try is replicate the situation with the Wyvern... then I'll know if it is the Corsair or something more generic with my setup...

Skip thanks for your reply, there should be nothing wrong with the cat launch all my tests were with Vic and Ark stopped just loafing around, the engine off launch confirmed a gentle glide from around 200 Kts leaving the deck to making a big splash.

Airtrooper the only explaination is there is something wrong in your setup, if you do the shift+I thing once only followed by full throttle then shift+space it should work, you should not need a zero throttle launch, however see how you fare with the Wyvern
 
Seems I can not edit to delete the Corsair cat settings please ignore that post as it looks like it does'nt work.

Mods please remove that post

Thanks, I just typed that wrong. I was using the correct command (it attempts to connect).

For those who are launching tail draggers (except for the Wyvern which is special) what are your realism settings? Mine are always at max. Perhaps this makes a difference.

There is nothing special about the Wyvern it uses the same kind of cat and hook settings tailored to that aircraft and others with those settings tailored to the aircraft should and do work at least for some.

Not sure what settings I have for realism but will check max later.

How close are you to the cat hookup position? the settings I posted has a small blue lihgt just under the prop when the lights are switched on which is the hookup point, what carriers are you using ? I only use Ark Royal and the as yet unreleased Victorious that I know do work.
 
Airtrooper, just tried it with realism sliders to max and that gives around 5 seconds at max power then the launch assist dissengages and you move off under engine power only and fall of the deck into the drink try the realism settings as per this screenie which will give you a good bit longer, the 5 sec is I think a FSX thing.

Are you setting up the launch to watch it in spot view or setting it up in spot opening the throttle then going for cockpit view to launch, if you are doing that try engaging holdback etc and move to cockpit before opening the throttle and do'nt delay the launch.

Your problem is I think with the realism settings so you will need to juggle them to suit yourself.

mfitch, use the light to position it in the launch box, are you using the default F18 to position on the cat then swapping to the Corsair ? if yes before you activate the cat check the light is in the launch box there may be a difference in aircraft cat settings in the models.

The F18 settings are in the model not the aircraft cfg that thing has been moved to my backup hanger out of FSX altogether so do'nt know much about it, how are you getting on the default carrier in freeflight ?

Realism settings do not seem to affect the actual hook up to the shuttle.
 
My realism settings are also maxed out. Many of my tests are performed by starting the carrier practice mission (default F-18) then switching aircraft before taxiing to the cat.

If I find time, I will try some of the other carriers (Ark Royal, Clemenceau, Nimitz are in my collection).

The Wyvern is different in at least one way: they have period catapult cables in their animations. This of course does not affect functionality, but it does make it a great model. I'm not sure why it has worked when others have not on my machine.
 
mfitch, as I said before the Wyvern is the only taildragger I know of that has cat and catch out of the box all the others I listed I added catlaunch capability to, check the aircraft.cfg for each of your taildraggers and see if it has a entry something like this,

launch_bar_pivot = 6.433, 0.0, -3.522
launch_bar_lug = 10.423, 0.0, -7.42

If not then it is not cat capable until such a entry is put in tailored to that particular aircraft and will not hook up on the shuttle
 
JF Sea Mosquito another that did not have cat settings so I added them works fine for me And I think Henry has used it
 
Hmmmm, progress of a kind here... I changed my settings to match. I did manage to successfully launch off the cat of Ark Royal, once. However, this was after many disengagements and re-engagements. The Corsair bounces around quite a bit when the cat first engages, but then it disengages of its own accord... with the throttle still at idle (worse than before). Ark Royal seems to bounce around a lot for me anyway, so I'm wondering if this is the issue, i.e. aircraft being "thrown off" the cat. Perhaps this is something to do with me using real world weather (via REX v2) and it being pretty windy at the moment.

Again, I'll have to try other aircraft. Right now I just can't land the Wyvern successfully and getting very annoyed with myself... time to step away from the PC! If I were shotting this many approaches and been waved off this many times I would have been diverted ashore long ago!

I should also go back to basics and try the default F-18...
 
Likewise I have managed a single, successful launch of the Corsair from the Ark Royal. It failed to engage on the first attempt, but for some unknown reason it did work the second time and catapulted nicely. My first attempt on the Clemenceau engaged then disengaged when the throttle was increased.

The jumping around reported is what I normally see. It looks like FSX is trying to place the plane level which of course is wrong for a taildragger. This leads to a sequence of level then falling back on the tail wheel until FSX gives up and disengages the cat.

I still plan to check if FSX is overly concerned about position when engaging these. Normally if the plane is mostly in the correct position and attitude, FSX corrects the rest without complaint (any jet I have tried).
 
Think I will leave things as they are as no amount of juggling the cat settings will fix the problems you both have, you could try putting your realism slider to easy and see what happens if all ok go to medium and try again if ok juggle the sliders upward 1 at a time, I tried the cat hookup with everything at max and it worked ok with no jumping about just a slide into position.

Maybe Ms interpretation of realism is fiction.

Maybe I do'nt have it so can't say but I never have.

I do'nt have any bouncing around with Ark just slight swaying only noticable in gear legs compresing

Anyway I am happy with the cat launch settings I have done, they work for me.
 
Unreliable cat

I've had a chance to go back to basics flying the F-18 onto the Ark Royal in the FSX "fair weather"... with inconclusive results. At first when I hooked onto the cat it kept disengaging and re-engaging, on and off every few second. After taking a turn about the deck and hooking up again it stuck... I could spool up to full afterburner for minutes at a time and she wouldn't budge! Then another time I spooled up just beyond idle and the cat disengaged again!

This all means the problem is not the Corsair!

One theory I found on other threads is too much cross-wind over the deck (or even if low wind speed, the carrier steaming cross-wind itself) causes the cat to disengage. I'm using "fair weather" with low winds, but then I do have the Ark steaming at full tilt (~30 knots), so a few degrees sailing out of wind may cause a reasonable cross-wind component...
