3D Modeling Question

Mick

SOH-CM-2025
I'm asking this for my partner David Wooster, who does the 3D part of our joint projects. David seems to be having trouble getting into this forum, so he asked me to post the question.

He's having trouble with our latest project. Here's his description of the issue:

"With the aircraft shadow turned on and the sun is directly over head, the cockpit area shows up on the ground, when it should not be there - like the cockpit is open all the way to the ground with no floor in it, but there is a floor there."

David builds with the latest version of FSDS. As most of you know, he's built scads of models, and hasn't run into this issue before.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

In FSX, cockpit shadows are a bit difficult. The parts require to be sealed like containers. From what I understand, flat panels (polygon structures in a plane sheet) will not block the light, while a cube will.

This was a argument during the beta of FSX and it never was able to be pushed into the production FSX version.

I hope I am wrong on this, but thats what I remember on the subject.

Is this happening on the VC model only or on the exterior model as well?

Make sure that the interior floor panel is textured as the prototype model without textures will tend to have parts disappear in the sim until they are textured. Make sure also that your lightmaps are attached to parts with materials that have shine in them.

Thanks Tom - I hadn't thought of that. I just cross-posted the question in that forum now.

Thanks Bill. We're working in FS9, so I don't know how relevant your comments are - I just hope they apply! I've copied your post and forwarded it to David.

OK, David figured it out.

Don't ask me to explain what the issue was. He explained it to me, and my eyes glazed over! I haven't the foggiest notion what he was talking about!

Roger that..

In FS9, parts disappear alot if they are in certain angles, distances, and not textured when in FS being tested. Must be what happened.

Hope your friend gets into SOH ok.

Bill
