4 Bladed Prop

Hi Guys,

Out in the local Air Museum ( Classic Flyers http://www.classicflyersnz.com/index.php )

we have this 4 bladed wooden prop that no one seems to know what it's off.

The measurements are ......

Diameter = 57.25" ( 1454mm )
Thickness = 3.75" ( 95mm )
Blade cord ( width ) = 140mm
Hole diameter = 2.5" ( 64mm )

The blades are partially covered with a copper sheeting 390mm long.

We don't know if it was fitted to and aircraft or what ????

Any guesses ..... please.

I have no clue what the prop was used on...wish I could help you. But I know what I would love to see that prop attached to....my wall! I want a nice sized prop to hang on the wall of my office/sim room. I have a small propeller clock, but it isn't the same. The prop clock is a small, 2-blade prop about 2 foot across with a small battery operated clock in the hub area. I picked it up at one of the local craft/decor shops...luckily I found it during a 50% wall decor sale...still paid nearly $20 for the thing.

I have been checking Craigslist and E-bay for a larger prop, but the only ones I have seen on those sites have been priced way above my ability to pay.

Could it be a Supermarine Walrus prop, with the copper cladding as extra protection against sea spray?
 
You might try posting that shot over in the Wooden Propeller forum. Those guys might have an answer for you pretty quick.

The first thing that came to mind for me was an old airboat prop with that metal taking up so much of the tips. Good for whacking through the cattails. :)

Might have come off a Supermarine Walrus, I see it has remnants of a black paint on it. Either a Walrus or another kind of early flying boat like one of those used by the Walsh brothers?
 
Kinda small for a four bladed prop, with a diameter of only 1.45 meters.
The problem with identifying parts like these is that there have been thousands of different propeller driven aircraft models in the twenties and thirties..
