5 new TOW Lancaster MkIII's 2026-07-31

No permission to download
Yes well I asked Ted's wife if she had his old hard drives but too late as she had wiped them and given to a community college. Without the model work I assume no chance, and I tried to put the relevant m3d from with glass and with dds changes to without, but different models so no go.

I'm sure we'd all love to see it.

The model is titled as a mk3 coded 'DXA' but the texture is WSJ from the ETO install.

Anyone recognise it?

I did go through every single Lanc in ETO and TOW, but I'll have a look again plus maybe go though several BU installs I have on the Home server. It will take a while but I know the MkI model is different from the MKIII WRT pits.

This is what Ted sent. A gmax model titled DXA but the included textures were for WSJ.

I'd asked him for Lancaster files to make a taxiing version and this is what I received. No idea what he had in mind for them. I'm no Lancaster expert, do you know anything about DXA?

There was an Airfix 1/72 model, serial LM624.

It was a "Lead Lancaster" outfitted with Gee-H radio navigation equipment. It featured a highly distinct, colorful red-patterned tail fin used to guide day-bombing formations. It was tragically lost on November 6, 1944, during a raid to cut Germany's Mittellandkanal.

This one looks like the standard model plus an H2S blister. How many other variants do we have out there? I know there is the one with the enlarged bomb bay doors, and a Dambusters one, and one for the Grand Slam. Are there enough gmax files around where the missing parts of one might be able to be added from another and vice versa (I'm probably displaying my great ignorance in how gmax works). With the model Clive has, if glass is added to the turret, we could have that one plus a standard Mk.I with the blister deleted.

As far as Gmax goes, all we have is this one lonely example, all his siblings are lost.:(

I can delete bits such as the blister to make other similar versions but it would require someone with more skills than I to do anything else with it.

Here's the m3d with nose turret glazing plus a few other odd bits corrected.

What is interesting here is that there are 2 t.dds files mentioned; lancaster_mk1_wsj_t.dds and lancaster_mk3_dxa_t.dds along with lancaster_mk3_dxa_s.dds. I'm not sure how that works but past checking has shown Mk1 do have glass and it was the Mk3's which were missing it. When I tried to put Mk1 pits into Mk3 aircraft it was a mess; I'm sure I posted pics of that somewhere earlier. Anyway I'll check it out later on both ac.

Could you send me this vehicle model DXA t and s dds and the wsj t dds texture files, i.e. the texture files in your vehicle Lancaster. I am trying to get chatGPT to compare m3d models and associated dds files. We note differences in the m3d files are are trying to see what is going on as the vehicle model had additional canopy components.
  • canopy_ext
  • canopy_ext01
  • canopy_frame
  • canopy_frame01
  • turret1_glas02
while the flyable Mk3 only has canopy01 as well as different dds files
lancaster_mk3_wsj_t.dds
lancaster_mk1_tow_s.dds
damage_us.dds
pilot_raf_crew.dds
prop_us_brit.dds
reticle_br.dds

to the vehicle one which has
lancaster_mk1_wsj_t.dds
lancaster_mk3_dxa_t.dds
lancaster_mk3_dxa_s.dds
pilot_preussen.dds
prop_us_brit.dds

The vehicle model is apparently combining:

  • Mk I WS-J texture material,
  • Mk III DX-A texture and specular material,
  • extra canopy meshes.

The regular flyable model uses the TOW Mk III texture and the Mk I TOW specular texture, but apparently renders its canopy_glas01 mesh in a way that makes the transparency invisible or ineffective.??

Also any cockpit m3d files.
