For eight successive nights from May 1, 1941 bombs rained down on Liverpool killing 1,746 Merseysiders and injuring 1,154 others. More than 90,000 homes were destroyed or damaged and 75,000 people were left homeless.

This shows part of a Luftwaffe training film about how to recognise key points when raiding Liverpool. It's part of a BBC North West documentary to be show soon.

Probably my number 1 reason for the respect I have for the people of England,their essential toughness. Best epitomized by Churchill's famous quote, "We shall never give in!". It takes a tough, resilient kind of people to pull through, and England did.

I think I know what you mean, UncleTgt.

I was a very young kid, 3 or 4 year-old, when my parents took me out for a stroll on a Sunday afternoon around my hometown.

Rebuilding of Fidenza after WWII damage was not 100% completed yet and, in spite of my very young age, I swear I can still remember a couple of rubble piles with two bomb craters nearby. The whole area was fenced and to my young eyes it looked gigantic, enormous.

At the time I could not grasp fully what I was looking at, I remember my dad telling me the meaning of those huge holes in the ground. Many years later, after I learned about WWII, and even now the visual memory of that sight still sends shivers down my spine.

I only wish United Kingdom people will not choose soon to leave and drift away from the European community, even though I am not an enthusiastic supporter of Bruxelles policies.

It was only thanks to England, first and foremost, that totalitarianism found its first serious obstacle back in 1940. The seeds of the idea for a united Europe, in defence of world's peace, were first sown then.

We all need each other here in the Old Sod.

Well said. I agree that Britain took on an enormous burden waging war against Herr Hitler, and did it admirably. I shall remain mute on my feeling about Britain's latest struggles for the sake of avoiding politics in the forums.
 
I have an old book from 1948 with photograps from wwII, the picture I am referring to it is from London were you see an english bussiness man wearing black suit,bowler hat and umbrella walking through piles of rubble.Thats enlish mentality,I am a big admirer.
