A-10 Thundbolt gun sound.

Does anyone know where I can get a freebee recording of the gau-8 gun sound (a couple of seconds would do). I have an A-10 on CFS2 which I just like to play around with...the gun sound file/s I have sound like crap. There is some suitable video on youtube but don't know how to record the sound off it.

Edit : one of these days I'll learn how to spell.

I have one that I made up for the Aerosoft A-10 for FS9. PM me your email and I can send you the file.

A caveat:

The catch is, once you put in the GAU8 sound file, you have to rename it to one of the default gun sound names in order to activate it -- its the only way to use it. Your choices are .303 cal., 7.7 mm, 12.7 mm (.50 cal), 13 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm and 40 mm. The associated sound files are located in the main SOUND folder as:

13GUN.WAV (13 mm)
20CAN.WAV (20 mm)
30CAN.WAV (30 mm)
40CAN.WAV (40 mm)
50GUN.WAV (12.7 mm or .50 cal.)
303GUN.WAV (.303 cal.)
792GUN.WAV (7.7 mm)

These are the names you will choose from for renaming and are also the default choices provided in Dped for setting up the gunstations. So let's say you choose to use the 30 mm option, set up your dp gunstation as "30 mm" and rename your GAU8 sound file as 30CAN.WAV. Its all good for the A-10 Hog, but now every fighter in your hangar which has a 30 mm cannon will have the same rapid firing burp sound of the GAU8 Gatling. Your Mig cannons will sound this way, unless you modify their dp's to another weapon sound.

Since the A-10 is a modern warplane in an era where 30 cal. weapons are long extinct in warplanes, i knew i wouldn't need this sound option in my modern CFS2 install. So i renamed my GAU8 file as 303GUN.WAV. In modding the A-10's dp gunstation, chose the .303 gun option, but altered the ROF, range, MV and Dice to reflect the behavior and power of the 30 mm GAU8 Gatling.

Maybe try this one?

.

There is one A-10 out there with a GREAT gun sound - allot like a buzz-saw.

I just checked the Alpha model and that ain't it.

Possibly the "WebinBlue" A-10 unit?

Found it at SimV ... top of page 5 (Modern Aircraft section) & get the weapons update directly below.

Hope this helps yas.

As I do know how to grab the sound from a video here is a GAU-8 firing for real,I can cut it up and remove the talk if you need to.:jump:

found another.Edit...here is a 2 second burst I cut from the first file.

I've done some snooping around the past couple of days and was able to find a web site via a friend that converts video files from Youtube to mp3 file.
There is some good GAU-8 videos on there so I pinched one and converted it to mp3 -then wav file form. A little volume editing and substituted the 40mm can sound file.
Works very well inside but outside the cockpit it's still a 'normal' 40mm cannon sound...a little more tinkering to do.

Edit: yeah my distant memory told me there is a matching 'external' 40mm cannon sound file as well.
Sounding good. Thanks guys.

:wavey: The first of those zip files safn is the one I used....had found it before, but at the time didn't know how to record the audio off it....all good now.

Yo demorier;

Here are the internal & external GAU-8 sounds I've come up with. :wavey:

They sound very close to the real thing - but 40 years of heavy metal music has damaged my ears (and brain?)

I think I've got the volume level close, but I can easily make it LOUDER.

Could one or more of yous check them out & tell me what yas think?

Pretty good dirtman....just personal preference I guess....I think I'll stick to my own creation at this stage. They reckon it sounds a bit like a fart while firing in flight.

Soooo, Demorier....let's imagine that you and a few of your A-10 friends go out for a little tank busting. Now, you as the player have the hookup on the right gun sound, but whadaya think their guns will sound like? It won't be anything like yours, i promise. The ai sound files are independent of the player's, so you'll need to modify the ai 40 mm sound too. And once you do that and go up against an installation or single target with 40 mm AA defenses, those guns will sound like your modified ai gunfire. That's a lot of farting to contend with. The plot thickens, right?...:iidea::banghead:

Yeah bear...had that happen ages ago, couldn't work out what was happening for a while.

I actually only have just a few non-PTO WW2 aircraft, the A-10 being one of them. I just use them to blast the crap out of some poor unsuspecting enemy with little defenses (ground attack stuff). Must check that, I did have a cannon armed Mosquito or was it a B25? at one stage that used the 30mm sound (I think)??

Ok, i'm a little confused here -- i think you said earlier that you replaced the 40mm files, right? And going further, almost all of your WWII combat ships have some form of 40 mike gun. This, and the aforementioned problem, is exactly the why i chose the option of replacing the .30 cal wav files in my Modern CFS2 install and none of the others. Since the .30 cal is practically useless in all modern era aerial and air defense combat, i only fly my A-10 in my Modern sim. These are the kinds of incidental conflicts that justify having a separate stand-alone install.

Time to "push the envolope" again?

.
This sound conflict issue is one of the many reasons I prefer to use separate & independent installs of CFS2 ... as it keeps these problems to a minimum. Like Bearcat; I too have an install dedicated to "modern aircraft" (1975 to present day)

However; I wonder if we could solve this problem a different way, fix it properly and come up with something new?

I say this because in the 6 years I've been hacking CFS2; I found that very little is actually impossible - you just need to get "creative" in finding a solution.

Some of you who frequent the SimV forum know that Tango_Romeo has just found a way to add another explosion effect (nuke) that is separate from the stock: small, medium & large explosion effects.

I would expect it is somehow possible to create a new category of "gun sound" specifically for the 30MM GAU-8 Avenger. (or any other weapon too)

So what do yaz think ... any ideas? ..... View attachment 28003

Yes, yes, let us gather the great minds of CFS2 together on this. I'm sure "we" can come up with a solution.:salute:

What do ya mean!!?? "you're not invited":ernae:

Really though, you gurus have already done amazing stuff, I'm sure you could deal with this too.

It's a pity we can't just drop the gun wav's into the individual airplane's sound folder. Much like we can do with flap sounds etc. Would probably have to be modelled that way to start with I guess. We shouldn't have much trouble collecting some fart sounds for it.:wavey:
