Did they have no concept of diminishing returns ? No, actually, they didn't.

Yes, the colour pic is a very interesting contrived one of an 'aircraft' much bigger than the Kalinin, and I would be interested to know from whence it came !

Anyone ever seen that movie from ages ago, black and white movie that depicts the future world war, travelling to the moon in a rocket, helicopters, etc? In the movie, during the 'great world war', one side has these huge flying wings that can fly all the way around the world. They were much bigger then this with exterior walkways, etc.

That is one of my projects. The exterior is basically finished; need to "guess" what the VC would have looked like. For FS2002/FS2004.

Here is a slideshow of it making a "flyby". It looks like it is just a few hundred feet off the ground; but I never went below 1000 ft.

It's been a chore trying to reconcile the "floor plans", front and side views with the image you linked to. I think it is pretty close.

Someone showed me how to reprogram the cockpit view keys; have them reprogrammed to show various locations aboard. I left the "minor" walls (such as between rooms) out; but have the major walls along the passageways, and a crude model of the interior of the auxillary wing (I am afraid I was going to run out of polygons before even starting on the VC.)

The scary thing is that some of it begins to make sense; when you study it. Carrying spare engines sounds silly -- until you find out that Boeing 314s carried a spare. Those thick columns holding up the auxillary wing could have held fresh water, oil, and fuel surge tanks along with stairs, pipes, and control lines; in typical flying boat fashion, the floats would have held the main fuel tanks. The lifeboats would have been stored on the "tank deck" just on top of the fuel tanks; fuel pumps would have been there as well. There appears to be another deck just above that and below the pod; it could have held mail and cargo.

Excellent job on the Bel Geddes, that's a very ambitious and detailed project. A giant plane like that really needs a couple different view options. Good possibilities for animations too. The .fx file for the wakes will be similar to that of an aircraft carrier. :icon_lol:

That's a good point about the wakes; right now I am getting a single wake between the two floats. :wiggle:

I don't know how to create effects file; maybe someone will be able to help me with it.
