A few shots from Tuesday's EAA

Hi, buddy. That isn't the story I heard. I know Captain Bill Overstreet personally.Bill flew with Bud Anderson. They both were and still are great friends, and his story is that they both had wide whites painted on their tires because they both had cars that had them back home. Bill's plane, The Berlin Express had red wheels as well. His was based on the 1936 Buick that he drove, which was black with red wheels and wide whites. I have an autographed model of one on my shelves at work that he signed and donated to us back in March of this year.

Hi Don,

All I can say is what I wrote is what I recall reading from an article about the restoration, but as of right now I can't trace it back to the source - though I'll try a bit more. I'm very sorry if it is indeed incorrect!

I'm not sure if you know about it already, but there is a P-51B under restoration at Pacific Fighters, which will be finished in the markings of Overstreet's "Berlin Express", the 43-24823 example (the P-51B that was Anderson's most famous Old Crow, which was then assigned to Overstreet after Anderson's first tour was up). It too will be sporting an original Malcolm hood, like "Impatient Virgin".

Unfortunately the F2G Super Corsair "Race 74" will not be at the show. It was reported earlier this week, that after the test flight(s) early last week, the screens were absolutely full of metal, some of it in chunks as large as quarters, so the engine is fairly much toast and has been pulled.

Tomorrow (Friday) they are expecting an extremely rare Fairy Swordfish to make its arrival from Canada. It just flew for the first time following restoration work, a few days ago, and is part of the Vintage Wings of Canada collection.

I didn't know that, John. I'll have to call Bill and ask about it. We just interviewed him a couple of weeks ago, but I have not read any of the transcripts yet. Maybe he mentioned it. Man, I hope they can fly the plane into here for him to see it. He is such a great guy, and still sharp as a tack. He just can't get around as well as he used to. He was kind of a hell raiser in his day. He sported a little goatee when he flew, which was very much non-reg! He also wore a red tie because he like it better with the uniform. LOL! We had his uniforms on display at a fundraiser I held back in November. Lots of little things like that. Great to listen to. Thanks for the heads up on the Berlin Express!! :ernae:

Don

EDIT: I just looked at that site. I guess he does know about it. He signed some parts for it! LOL! Man, that will be nice. I hope they finish it before something happens to him!

That is awesome that there was a Fairchild FC-2 there. I think it belongs to the museum there; did you happen to get any cockpit pictures of it?

Sorry, no cockpit shots.
Usually I do not take any pics, cause I see these aircraft every year. But I took a few to post here. Not real good, but something to see.
I hear traffic was a nightmare today. Backed up for 5 to 10 miles.

I'm hoping there is a better traffic system in-place for exiting the show after tomorrow night's 'night show'. Last year it was quite an adventure, with everyone leaving at once.

Usually the traffic flow is not so bad. But this year the main highway, 41, is under construction. 2 narrow lanes both ways for 15 miles or so. Weather is forecast to be near 90F and humid. Hope you have a great time B 12.

You lucky dog! I'd like to see them just once.

No problem; every Fairchild FC2/FC2W2/71 I have seen had a different panel arrangement other than the fuel switch and magneto switch; no doubt different upgrades over the years.

Thank you very much for sharing these pictures; it was a very pleasant surprise to see the FC-2 among them.
