Hi guys;
Reading this book is really interesting. It is the story of a Luftwaffe pilot of ww2 who spent time in the various theaters of Africa and Europe. He gives some good descriptions of the layouts of some various airfields and fighter tactics. He also goes into the 109G and its problems in handling.
Really good read. He also is the pilot who escorted a severly wounded B17 through some German flak fields and. helped them to safety.

Errata

In my previous post I see that I mispelled the authors last name wrong. I inadvertently Added a letter. The authors last name is Makos . No “r” in the name. Hard typing on a IPAD.

Good read!

Couldn't agree more. A great book, and if you liked it, try "Spearhead" by the same author. In each case Makos has a flare for creating a personal connection with the subject, whether he be a pilot or a tanker.

This is one of my favorites as well. One of my favorite moments is the book is the account of the advice by Gustav Rodel of JG 27 while Franz was in North Africa..."Honor is everything here. You are fighter pilots first, last, always. If I ever hear of you shooting at someone in a parachute, I will shoot you myself," and "You fight by the rules of war for you, not for your enemy. You fight by the rules to keep your humanity."

A truly decent soldier and leader if ever there was one. In some ways, I believe that the B-17 crew owes their lives, at least to an extent, to Rodel's leadership and humanity that left such an impression on young Stigler.
