Guys,
With help from Owen I am working on a pretty major project for release in December (maybe). The project is a very detailed and intense set of missions that will chronicle WW II through the eyes of an artillery pilot with the 3rd Division, 9th Battalion Field Artillery.
The missions will take you thru the Italian Campaign starting with the assault on Monte Cassino, through Operation Dragoon (Landing in Southern France) and the march thru Europe to Germany.
The missions will be based on personal accounts by Alfred Shultz in his book "Janey, a Little Plane in a Big War." All missions will be flown from unprepared farm fields and roads where you will be located near the artillery Battalion you are supporting. You will see the War from a different perspective, up close and personal. You will see and experience things you would never see flying larger and faster bombers and fighters.
During your "campaign" you will fly primarily day missions with one or two night sorties flown from fields using our new smudge pots. The fields will average 900 ft in length with bordering trees and varying winds. Adajcent better looking fields will be mined with a new "aircraft mine" that will destroy your aircraft if you land near one.
Mission goals will be to knock out German targets, armor, artillery and depots using your Filed Artillery. Each mission will require you to fly to way points that will trigger spawned "shelling" that will destroy your target goal. However each WP will expose you to differing levels of ground fire.
You will also encounter German aircraft (primarily in Italy) including German fighter interceptions. each encounter will be drawn from historical accounts as described in the book.
I am in the process of building new facilities along with all of the spawns and new weapons to provide the immersion and intensity of this up close and personal war.
Unfortunately we do not have the correct Piper L-4 so we will be using the ETO L-5 as a stand in. I am hoping that Mike will be able to build us a converted LST Carrier to use but we may have to do with a small escort carrier like the USS Ranger that was used during Operation Torch to launch L-4s during the invasion.
I believe that you will enjoy this change of pace and the experience will give you a new found appreciation for the Piper L-4 that was the most devastating Tactical aircraft in WW II. The L-4 destroyed more men and material than any other tactical aircraft employed by the Allies.
Progress pictures to follow,
Best Regards,
Steve
