A Lockheed "Rounder"

I've been looking at the texture mapping and thinking that this is a good opportunity for me to really pull out all the stops and see what I can do. And I'm currently looking at what I consider to be some of the best bare metal in FS9 ever done and think I've got it figured out how it was pulled off.

I'm treating this as an on the job learning experience. And if I can improve my limited skills, then so much the better.

Willy; always greatly inspiring to see the the creative mode kicking in - go for it, Sir :encouragement:

Keep us updated and share the learning experience. If you need any kind of input, please don't hesitate :)

You might consider a progress thread - I'm sure this would be most helpful to others wishing to start their own texturing.

Hi Milton,

I've never created a bare all metal template before, so I shall have a try. I can't promise anything though, since for repaints I always relied on the bare metal textures of other people (in particular Nigel can't be beaten so far), and I don't have "layer"programs such as photo shop or paint shop pro.
I can't put up any deadline for myself right now, due to health.

Cheers,
Maarten

Hey Maarten - hope you're feeling better soon, my friend :)

Huub beat me to it with his excellent HU - you really must go for a layer program for any kind of serious texture work - Photoshop's the pro's choice with its awesome capabilities and accuracy. I recently downloaded Gimp, mostly out of curiosity and was most pleasantly surprised by its similarity to Photoshop in basic functions - and it's free!

Don't be afraid of tackling the bare metal approach; once the fundamentals are understood, it's really not quite as difficult as you might think.

Invest as much time as you can on panel/rivet/shadowing first - hold of any attempts at metal until these are completed, otherwise the metal will have no body or substance. :encouragement:

I've got a start on a Lodestar base plain just bare metal paint. I got panel lines laid down when I ran into computer issues and ended up getting a new machine last week. I'm still loading my stuff onto the new one, but the Lodestar folder is in the middle of the desktop so I can't miss it. I've had a request for a TWA one so that will be the first one out when I get back to it.

thanks Mllton for the update.... ( ill need the Lockheed to spot the Bounty far from the coastlines..) :wavey:

Harpoons and Lodestars Coming ... Kind of ...

This thread was started in December 2011 with the intent to do a Harpoon and a Lodestar.

Here we are in June 2015 and neither has been delivered. :banghead: It's frankly embarrassing and frustrating for me and, I am certain, frustrating for all of you who have contributed and supported our efforts over the years.

It is a consequence of talented team members moving on leaving FS9 or the sim community behind. That is the reality we face today.

Nigel and I have done what we could to bring things forward but it is nearly impossible today to deliver a full package aircraft of any quality.

I am therefore, in a height of frustration, throwing in the towel on full blown projects and releasing everything here as a WIP.

For those interested, you may download, install, modify, and share your work with others to bring these projects to flyable and enjoyable states.

I will include sounds from Nigel, paint templates, panel and gauges to the extent completed, and good flight models.

What you will need to do is paint liveries, and texture the panels and interiors.

I am now preparing the Lodestars (L-18, C-57, and C-60A with both Wright and P&W setups) for release and will post here when ready.

If any FSX modeler wants to convert these products to FSX native, they need to contact me.

What about the Harpoons??? They will follow, either completed or not, in due time.

I'm happy to do what I can, however slowly it happens.
I'm terribly sorry that things have been going so poorly - I'd have tried to help more, but real life gets in the way.
I have thought, though, that since most painters seem to be on the FSX side these days that you might get a better response developing for both sims by posting in the FSX forum... that seems to have done the trick for the Bounty and is doing the trick for the F7F...

Milton, I've been flying the Harpoon in our nightly flights lately. Did a quick and dirty "milsurp" paintscheme, pasted "Flight 19 Air Cargo" on the sides and it was good to go after I fixed up a panel like I wanted it (SOH A-26 gauges mainly). It flies great and for my purposes it's a definite frontline aircraft now. Don't sell your work in progress stuff short. It's still a lot better than a lot of stuff that's out there.

I'll have a go, on some textures for it Milton. Never painted inside before, so it's about time I had a go.
As for the harpoon If you want me too update the skins I sent you, i'll just need the latest model, as the layered masters survived for them.

Thanks Willy. I am not selling our work short; we just have such a backlog, we will be 2 years or more getting it out at the current pace. Therefore I am making it all available for anyone who wishes to do textures and some interior work.

Steve,

I should have it all packaged and uploaded in a few hours. Will post links. Thank you :)

These downloads are available to any SOH member.

No worries Milton, I had an eternal backlog that I could never seem to make a dent in, HDD failure cured the problem for me.

I now have uploaded the Lodestars, the C-57 and C-60A in one package, the L-18 in another, and the Vega Ventura will follow later today. Each of these aircraft have both Wright and P&W cowlings available.

Over in the Mallard "Fresh Mesh" thread, the Grumman Mallard is also available if you are interested.

All the packages include the 2048 paint templates.

Thanks Milton! Got the Lodestar in pieces on my desktop now. I just have one quick question. Is the texture mapping the same as it was for the AI version you released a little while back? I've got a start on thosetextures, but due to computer problems and having to buy a new comp, re-installing FS and all my goodies, then getting sidetracked with the dark side, it kind of got back burnered and then fell off the back of the stove. From what I saw in the release, if my previous efforts are still good, I'd be better off picking up what I had and using that.

Yes, the same W. :)

Regarding the Vega Ventura, I need to do a little gmax work on that first. I left some parts hanging out in mid-air awaiting the new center console. :)

I may get that uploaded Wednesday or Thursday.

A Ventura too? Be still my heart! It's raining Lockheed twins!!!

Yes, now if we can just get Nigel to finish up the Harpoon interiors, we would have 4 more. :)

Let's hope there is no shortage of paint because they all need it. :-;
