A message from Matt Wynn

SOH-CM-2023
Matt's asked me to post this, because he can't. His PC has finally given up the ghost (it sounds as though the mobo may have fried), until he can afford to replace it he is, as he put it, "out of the game". :( He can only access the internet at the moment via his iPhone which is fine for Facebook, Skype but not, apparently, SOH.

I don't know if this will have any impact for ongoing projects (certainly will for a couple fo things we were working on, might be a bit of a delay on the TSR2 guys), but he thought it best t make you all aware.

Hopefully he's pinched enough pennies (or drachma, or whatever) not to put him out of commission too long. Think his keyboard sensed the excitement radiating from his fingertips over the new Dr.I and sent that to the mobo? We anxiously await his return.

Sadly he is not in line for any of the German bailout money, so it could be a bit of a wait.

German bailout money....? I thought he was in Greece. Hopefully he'll be back "in the game" soon, Andy.... I know how it is to be without a 'puter, and your favorite hobby. Aside from the fact that he isn't HERE for us to talk to. Bet he misses that most of all.

Oh sh** my wing man's down!

This is devastating news indeed.

Poor young fella has been really putting the work down on so many interesting projects.

And he's the life and soul of the party!

hey guys managed to log in on my bros laptop (he doesn't know i have it, a black op was required to get my mitts on it), just finished autopsy on my PC and i think i've figured why she went....

house is currently under renovation, last cleaned PC 3 days ago BUT.... yesterday i left my door open to let air circulate, during this time plaster (the fine powdery stuff used for skimming ceilings) and wood dust had entered my PC and i did not know... looking at the fan casing there are scratch marks, these i attributed to a dust getting in between blade and case and scratching, more or less till the fan wouldn't move but motor would, the MOBO is a total write off, HDD may be salvageable (yet to tell if it survived a 25ft fall into a skip outside), soundcard also salvaged. apart from that theres traces of soot and burnt marks and a couple of melted through cables (bear in mind it WAS 7 years old more or less and couldn't Run FS with any traffic or anti-aliasing)...

downside is i've looked on the web for a step up, something i won't have to fiddle with for a couple years, and for the spec i ideally need it'd be around the $1700 mark (converted from £1400), big problem there is i only have £3.75 ($7 roughly) in my bank, also am pretty much unemployable thanks to my doc and there is no way in hell i'm gonna claim benefits from the government, i have my pride still, another problem with the cost is that i'm not an exclusively FS9 painter, i also work in FSX (which got to about 5fps on my now deceased rig)...

so unfortunately if we work off interest of whats in the bank.... i'll be back to work in July.... 2148....

unfortunately this means i'm out guys, i just cannot afford a new rig, so unfortunately i'm down and out....

yeah i'll miss shootin' the Sh*t with you guys, and i'll miss my sim massively... it's the only thing thats kept me moderately sane and surviving these past few years...

so take care all, see you in the year 2148.....

So hat can we do to help Matt out? I definitely do not have $1700, but I can come up with a few of them. I know the economy sucks, for everyone, but can we figure out a way to chip in for a good cause?

LA

after chatting with my parents a mutual agreement was reached, they're willing to cover half of a new PC... unfortunately now i must complete my covert op and return my bro's laptop to where i found it in the exact position so as to not arouse suspicion....

take care all, Mike-Whisky out.... :salute:

well im broke myself.im on social security disability and after payday ,bils paid, rent paid, ect,,im left with 17 USD for the month..and i dont have any pc parts to send.....but if someone sets up a "fund" ill give 5 a month when i can for now, and maybe some of you have PC parts that could be frankenstiend to build one semi working pc for him?

$1700

Expensive ! .. very expensive .. too much
Why not take a look on the second hand market
You will find many good rigs (better than your deceased PC) around (more or less) 500$
Just my two cents .........

Navtech, I think Matt is looking at off the shelf prices (Dell, most likely), he can probably bring it in cheaper if he looks at a self build; the problem is that it really isn't his area of expertise, but I'll work with Matt on this, and I'm also happy to pitch in with a little money (but sadly only a little, my new job doesn't pay too well).

He needs a well specified machine in order to be able to do work (painting and model making) for both FS9 and FSX; his (deceased) PC couldn't run FSX at all, so any work he did was having to be checked by others & then adjusted - time consuming to say the least! Also the software involved (Photoshop, 3DSMax etc) also needs a decent spec, I think he was running just below what was needed, which may explain the issues he has been having trying to compile that control tower he was working on.

I'll liaise with him to sort out a decent spec level (it may need some compromise, get something that will work, but is also eminently upgradeable). I'll let you know when I have some news.

Can't help with the moolah but with will invite you to note my specs below. I believe I'm somewhere near the bottom of the computer chain but those parts do a real respectable job and I just recently went through a similar blow-up and got this built using some good parts from the old one, which I'm betting you have as well. That kind of re-build really saves some cash. No more off-the-shelf for this boy.

No more off-the-shelf for this boy.

You and me both, been building my own PCs for years. My current machine is a similar spec to yours, and neither of us is at the bottom of the heap, by a long chalk; I can run FSX (but with some restrictions) and FS9 runs all out. And I built it with a upgrading in mind, so I know I can swap out the CPU, or plug in more RAM (mind you, that would mean an OS change) & take it to another level. I'm not interested in bleeding edge, but do like to have some options.

I built a few 'puters over the years... one lasted for 10 years and at the end of it all... it still kicked FS9's butt. Bought a "Jetline" PC about a year ago... maybe a little less, can't keep the dust off of it. I have a middle of the road HP machine which does a right decent job with FS9. All the sliders maxed and locked in at 75fps. It cost me about $700.

Yo Matt... Never say never, mate. :salute:

yet again i'm risking my neck to post, 'ninja'd ' my bros laptop once more, i get caught well.... parents will throw me out but it's a good job i'm a crafty bugger....

been looking at PC's for the past hour, $1700 is now gone, i've brought it down to the $1300 mark, yeah it'd be a bought thing, no it wouldn't be a Dell (unlike the blown up thing),i can't build a PC as Lego alone P*sses me off!) a formal ceremony was held for my old PC today... thing was the first thing i ever bought with wages i'd earned so it held a special place in my heart...

many of you didn't realise this but a few did, i was making my first patrols into the development arena, website was set up, team created, model started.... and then PC Died, meaning i had to initiate my 'omega protocol', in the event that i was to lose PC or be away for an extended period i hand control of my company over to my 2I/C, let me tell you about this while i can....

many of you will recall the hangar i built with 'SpartiSim' on the side, well SpartiSim is my development team name, our first project is the FK14 Polaris and Possibly the FK14 LeMans, it'd be FS9 initially but with FSX also in mind, great progress was being made, the model was started and research into the various gauges was well underway... unfortunately without me at the helm this project will slow right down, unless my 2I/C learns my tenacity...

as Andy said i do repaint for FS9 and FSX, because i cannot get max graphics in either i feel i've been letting you all down with the quality... which is where the Sh*t hot PC would come into play, being fast and with great graphics would mean my turnover would increase as i'd be waiting less for things to load, save etc... if i could run FSX at near max settings (or at max) that'd be brilliant as then i could be able to actually fly some of the things IRIS has been building and i've worked on,

pretty much at this stage i have convinced my parents that their construction and destruction work around the house is partially to blame so they're willing to put half towards it (so $650-700), and the rest they said "is your problem, get a job!" and trust me if i could i would, but the current market and fast approaching the festive season everywhere doesn't seem to have any vacancies... combine that to my erm... 'Dodgy' knee and i'm not mobile for too long a period... and my pride won't let me claim benefits off the Govt. (which in my opinion couldn't run a brewery with a bunch of Geordies, but i'll stop that political rant right there!), so fortunately i have about $650-700 to find instead of $1300... great...

still, keep flying! if you have to fly a missing man formation, as i say i don't know if/when i'll be back to repainting, FS9, FSX and developing, so to all.... and from the bottom of my heart, take care and enjoy it :salute:

Mike-Whisky.... Out.....

Hmmm?
for the first time, whats about a 2nd hand PC ? I also don't have much money. I have payed for an intel Celeron 2,4 - 1024 Mb RAM and a GFX 5500 256 Mb €125.
It works, okay its not the best, but I'm very happy with it and very lucky to own a working PC. :kilroy: allways better as watching TV.

i may be in luck.... due to shifting the blame onto my parents for my PC dying, i once again asked my mum "what if you pay for the PC initially and i pay you back as things get done?", all i got was the answer "ask your dad!" so knowing my dad he'll tell me to get a job at which point i can use aforementioned docs note to say "would love to but can't", and he knows i set up SpartiSim also, the name was actually his and my mums idea...

so fingers crossed i can get them on side.... some new peripherals would be good too :icon_lol: just kidding.... i'll get them at christmas, but i may just up-spec the PC and tell them the minus VAT cost... crafty bugger..... ain't i? :icon_lol: just gotta hope that my dad agrees....

pray for me folks! and thanks for the support, you are all brothers to me.... just don't expect a christmas card alright? :icon_lol: (or presents, unless you'd accept a repaint)...

heres the key spec of the rig i may be able to convince them as getting as an early Christmas pressie....
