A mission idea...

Hey guys,

I was sitting in church this morning of all places and came up with an idea for an optional extension for the "Battle for Europe" campaign.

How does a series of "Operation Frantic" missions sound?

The thought of B-17s being escorted by Soviet as well as American fighters is an intriguing one...

If anyone can help with the research for this, please let me know!

Such interesting photos. Mind boggling to think of a 10 year old boy who had been in uniform for 3 years already. Operation Frantic is a part of WW2 history that I knew nothing about. It would make a very interesting subject for a campaign.

Ravenna,

The idea I had was to have it be an addendum to "Battle for Europe." Because It would require you to install additional bases for Italy and Russia, I would create between seven and ten missions as a mini-campaign for a stand-alone project, but I would also include an extended campaign file that would integrate these missions into the Battle For Europe campaign, allowing you to fly them as part of the entire package.

The British also did this with Lancasters on a mission when they attacked the Tirpitz anchored in a Norwegian fjord, departing from a Russian base called Yagodnik.

There is a CFS 1 mission "Night Visit to Poltava" by J Poltorak. It's a German raid on the parked B-17s. There is also an enhancement by Arno Brooks featuring searchlights and fires.

The mission converts to CFS 2. However, Poltava is not in the correct position due to the geographical confines of CFS 1.

Kdriver,

Achim made a base at Poltava, so that's one of the reasons why I want to try this. I also got him signed on to build Piryatin and Mirgorod.

I was thinking of doing escorts only for these missions, except for a fighter attack on a Polish aerodrome.

The fighters used will be P-51b and P-51d Mustangs, P-38j Lightnings, and Yak-9s with drop tanks.

I will also include one bomber mission...the German raid on Poltava.

Andrew,

I converted this mission some time ago but never finished it. At the time I adjusted the co-ordinates for the real Poltava. I've recently done a further adjustment to suit Achim's airfield.

I'll send it to you for your perusal.

Hey guys,

In order to lessen the workload for you, I extracted the GSL files for the Foggia complex from the Italy-South GSL in Achim's package and the Poltawa aerodrome from the Barbarossa-South GSL file using Martin Wright's tools and made individual GSL files for the three bases I'll be using from his two packs.

The .bgl and texture files for these bases alone will be included in the pack (permission pending), that way you won't have to install two complete scenery packages, and not use 95% of the bases you download. There will also be the two bases he's working on for this project, which will make for a total of five.

If you need any info on the shuttle missions to Africa, and Russia by the 95th/100th Bomb Group, I can photocopy some personal accounts and send them to you. Also, If you need skins for the right Bomb Groups, I'm your man,
Good luck,

Jack

Hey guys,

I gather from this statement that they essentially flew in a "triangle"?

They also flew shuttle runs, code-named 'Frantic'. These performed the same functions as the scout missions, only this time they flew from England to Russia bombing targets in East Germany on the way. In Russia the aircraft were refueled and the bombers re-armed. They then took off for Italy, again bombing targets in Eastern Europe en route. In Italy the tanks and bomb bays were filled and they left Italy for England once more bombing targets en route.
