a newbie looking for assistance

That is your appdata folder which is made when you first execute cfs3cfg.exe or cfs3.exe . according to whether you ran multicfs3.exe which you should do for all installs other than the basic stock CFS3 install, which is needed to run all the others anyway.

Thank you again Mongoose and sorry to be a bit of a pest....coz after thinking about it some more, I had figured it all out. Unfortunately, it all lead to; from what I've seen on this forum, a most detestable topic.........the ol'....error loading cfs3config unrecognized property set on line 501 thing...!
I have tried every suggested solution on the relevant sticky thread.....and none of it worked. It may work on a Windows 10 system, but on Win7, trust me, it doesn't.
Why am I still using Win7? The game is not on the computer I'm using now. It's on a separate offline standalone unit in my lounge, with no anti-virus software or anything else that can interfere, background operations at a minimum and the CPU slightly overclocked to keep the FPS up. Win7 is good and stable.

Unfortunately, this leaves me relegated to waiting for 'Wings over the Reich' to get their act together with controller mapping and resuming my volatile love/hate relationship with IL2 BAT. I want to thank everyone here for their time and assistance and sorry for being a pain in the ass.

I still run it on Windows 7, have for years......
Nevertheless, I've done all I can to try and get this problematical thing going. There are entire threads here full of people having trouble; evidence that it's not so easy to do. I've never had trouble with any IL2 upgrades & patches, no trouble with head trackers, virtual joystick apps, I even made my own trim wheel. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'm not completely stupid; that is not to say I'm blameless, but at this point, the only way the game will run on my computer will be if someone hops on a plane and flies to my home in Australia to fix it. Thank you for your comment. Goodbye and good luck.

I have encountered an issue in the past where I would get config errors, which would randomly resolve after several attempts to run the config exe. Also disabling the intro movie (or deleting it entirely) have been known to solve issues.

Hi Gecko and thank you for your suggestions. I have already tried the former, but I will have a go at the movie. If that doesn't work, I'm not viewing this experience as some great disaster; it's only a game! I just feel a lil' self-conscious about wasting other people's time over it, like your own. You and others have been most generous and have made me feel most welcome.

Firstly, don't be worried about it. It's what this place is. Second, windows 7 is well known to support CFS3 just fine, so it's very strange that it is being so problematic. I hate to see someone not be able to enjoy the game over something that seems preventable.

Are you at this point trying to run ankor's shaders? There is a direct x download that should be somewhere in the library which you absolutely must have (and that specific one) in order to get it to run with the new shaders. It has been the source of a great deal of frustration for those who missed it or got the wrong one.

Hi Gecko, ankors shaders was one of the suggestions to try from the sticky thread, which I did. There has never been any reference to a direct X download at any point of this installation, but I did install DX9 when I installed Wings Over the Reich. Are you saying there is another that I should have?

You're not gonna believe this.......I got it going!
It was the only thing from the sticky thread that I overlooked & had not tried; replace the configdatabase.txt file with the one on the disc.

I'd like to say something at this point...if this issue was a common problem; and it certainly looks that way from the thread, then why wasn't it resolved in the download? See, a newbie (quite rightly) assumes the update, which is old now, works properly without issue. To my thinking, I would've assumed a copy of the offending file might be included in the download with instructions.....'Hey, if it don't boot up, try this'.....
Furthermore, a newbie is unfamiliar with the forum and its resources or where to find things, so nothing is easy, and understandable if one gets put off......I ain't a genius, but I know how to follow instructions.... even faulty instructions.
The many posts I made would've been avoided and the selfless efforts from some wonderful people here wouldn't have been necessary; I'm sure they have better things to do......having said that............is there anything else I need to look out for?

On a lighter note, I'm looking forward to installing sounds, a/c, skins, missions and mapping up the controls to see what this sim is all about. If successful, I'll even have a go at installing terrain from Wings Over the Reich.
A big thank you again to all concerned.

Glad you're up and running! I don't recall coming across that as a solution before, so I don't think it's very common, but perhaps I overlooked it too. At any rate, have fun exploring the new possibilities. It's kept me entertained for nearly two decades now.

Thanks Gecko. I'm both looking forward to it and curious as to how it compares to IL2 BAT. I sincerely hope it's an improvement coz that's the reason I sought an alternative in the first place. When I'm familiar with it, I'll post a critique. Tally ho!

One of the main differences with IL2 is the fact that basically, since Microsoft lost interest, it is community run with no payware. That means people are all doing stuff for love, and although so much has been improved compared with the original, there are areas that can't compare with paid professionals working on payware. It's still being improved all the time by a dedicated few.

When I mention IL2, I'm referring to 1946 rather than the later titles, Battle of Stalingrad/Battle of Moscow, which are a completely different game. 1946 morphed into titles like VP Modpac, Dark Blue World and BAT. These were all put together by volunteer contributors, in the same way as this game currently is, with patches and upgrades available for free at one of 2 forums.
