A PTO (China-Burma-India) new skin for ex-donationware FDG2 P-51B/C Mustang!
A good day to everybody!
This is a way to say a big THANK YOU! for the SOH library restoration effort! Without Cobrauk's collection of P-51 Mustang skins I would have never accomplished this!
The repaint depicts North American Dallas plant built P-51C-10-NT 'Lope's Hope 3rd', flown by Ltnt. Donald 'Don' S. Lopez of 75th FS, 23rd FG, 14th USAAF, Kweilin, China in September 1944. In the China-Burma-India theatre, the 23rd FG took over the mantle of the Flying Tigers, swapped their P-40s for Thunderbolts and then Mustangs in 1944, but applied shark's theet to 76th FS P-51s only. Based at Kweilin, China, in late 1944, the 23rd flew very successful strafing and bombing attacks on shipping and land targets. Ltnt. Don Lopez survived the war and was interviewed in the late 1980's by Discovery Channel's "Wings" series, in an episode dedicated to the Curtiss P-40. During the program, a P-40E was shown on static display, I believe at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., restored and in the colours of Ltnt. Lopez's first mount, 'Lope's Hope'.
This repaint comes from my desire to reproduce the very first PTO P-51 I ever downloaded for CFS2, several years ago, which gave me the emotion of flying a Mustang in CFS2 for the first time. The original model was created by BR2 group and it's still available over at www.simviation.com in the older CFS2 download section. Unfortunately, the model file dates back to ten years ago and, for some reason, it does not show up anymore in a CFS2 run under XP and later Windows OSs. The aircraft ceased to show up when I switched from Windows 98SE to Windows XP.
Call it a sentimental reason, I always thought FDG2's P-51 razorback could be a good candidate, but painting the tailplane, elevators, vertical fin and rudder with the distintictive slanted black stripes of CBI theatre 24th Fighter Group, was beyond my skills. Until last week, when the restocking of SOH's download archives allowed me completing my collection of SOH's member Cobrauk repaints. He did a repaint of Andrew Wai's P-51D in the colours of the plane flown by Major Clyde B. Slocumb, C.O. of the 75th FS, 23rd FG. This repaint link was broken at SOH since the server HDD crash of two years ago. It just happens that Andrew Wai's P-51D texture mapping fits FDG2's P-51B/C with only minor adjustments. So there comes this repaint, actually a lot of "copy n' paste", of mine!
I also enclosed additional (this model normally uses the default stock US prop texture) full disc and single blade prop textures to choose from, Thicko's aerial mast and antenna wire, GG-style exhaust effect, alternative PTO dp file with Dbolt's US enhanced weapons and an alternative flight model with aircraft and pilot historical notes.
Enjoy!
