A question for you woodsie types.

It is skeeter season here in Ohio....and they are horribly bad right now due to all the rain we have been having. I mowed the lawn today and had to have 3 blood transfusions by the time I was done. Went down to the pond this evening (caught 2 Bass and a Sunfish) and had nearly all of my red blood cells sucked out....I am now anemic to the point that I look like Casper the Ghost.

I have a bottle of OFF Deep Woods insect repellent....which unfortunately I could not find when I was cutting grass or fishing because my wife had it neatly tucked away in the hall closet, behind some towels, the dog grooming box and a 75-year supply of Glade Plug-Ins refills.

I was just reading the label on the bottle. It is flammable, toxic, will turn the crystal on your watch into chocolate pudding or something. And I'm supposed to spray this stuff on my body?!?!?!?

Is there an effective insect repellent out there that does not have 13 internationally recognized symbols for poison as part of the package decorations? Something that if my dogs lick it off my legs before I can get to the shower and get it washed off won't make them go belly up (die in other words)? Something that is not going to turn me into a fire ball if I light up a cigarette too soon after applying it?

I've been using the stuff for years ( 98% Deet ) and the only problem I've had is an occasional discoloration of clothing / boots. When applying to the skin I always spray an amount into a palm and then rub it where I need it ( I don't take a shower in it ).
In mosquito season, I dress so that only my hands, neck and face are exposed and only apply in those locations, being careful around the eyes.
If its just ticks and chiggers buggin' me......I just spray the tops of my boots where I 've tucked my pants in.
Don't smoke ( I'm a smoker ) till the stuff has dried...( 2-3 min.) and your animals probably wont like the smell or want to lick you lick once they get a whiff.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Don't drink it or use it for eye-wash.
98% Deet will usually last for about 8 to 10 hrs.

I use OFF Deep Woods insect repellent a lot and never had any issues. My Dog and Cat although never tried licking me. I just suggest if ya worried due to harmful chemicals just take a shower. I think also OFF makes a childeren's variant. Precautions are always good to take if your worried on harmful effects.

there's also a new clip on insect repellant out now. just clip the little plastic holder to your pant's pocket and you're good to go.

don't ask me how well it works though.

wear light colors and put a dryer sheet on your belt loop. that helps a little

There are herbal insect repellents that do work well, but tend to be expensive and you must reapply often. I mostly use Deep Woods Off! I spray it on my shoes, my hat, a little on my clothing and if I need more protection, spray it onto my hands and rub it onto my neck and legs.

Obio, go dig into the wife's beauty stuff, chances are you will find a bottle of Avon Skin so Soft... now stop your laughing... one of the main ingredents is Deet, which is generally a very effective skeeter repellent and the added benefit is this stuff will not only keep the bugs away but you will get nice soft skin out of the deal, Oh and don't forget it does not repel the women folk they love the stuff...

BTW I am not joking here that stuff does really work, in May/June around here the Avon ladies sell more Skin so soft then the other 10 months of the year combined.

yeah anything with a high concentration of DEET is good, although it has a nice habit of melting things if you inadvertently get it on items... and the skin softeners idea yeah that works some as stated, due to the deet... Mosquitos are generally attracted to a number of things : Dark Clothing, Carbon Dioxide, Lactic Acid, Floral or Fruity Fragrances, Skin Temperature and Moisture to name but a few... however there are a few natural repellents out there.... Citronella Oil, Lemon Eucalyptus oil, Cinammon Oil, Clove oil... it's a long list, but remember repellent dulls after exposure, you have to keep topping up... and don't do what dumba$$ me did.... topped up on DEET then crossed a field... when raining, you get that stuff in your eyes... boy oh boy you complain on the plus It's very easy to make your own natural mosquito repellent. Those natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those containing a single ingredient. i say just DEET it

OBIO,....another option,...and one that does work but sounds a bit silly: Wear a long sleeve shirt you don't care about too much. Or pants. Then spray the mosquito repellent on top of the clothes articles. Set the shirt and pants aside for this type of outside yard work exclusively.

i ain't laughing.....the stuff works....and its alot less traumatic to your eyes if you accidentally get some in there...

If you do get bitten or stung by an insect, put some ammonia on it. Keep applying until it goes away.

Have used this(Avon skin so soft) for years in the Army and it works great, though have switched to garlic pills and generally just more garlic in my diet, great for the heart. Once the garlic permeats your pores, all bugs leave you alone and it truly doesn't make you smell garlicky either.

The new clip ons work great as well, something we use during the summer when at the drive in movies, as the kids don't take the garlic pills.

Two things to remember when using any DEET product , # 1 NEVER KISS YOUR LADY ON THE NECK ! if she is using it , you will find out why it works , the most horrible flavour of any you will come across.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

#2 it strips the labels off of glass and metal very well , do not use on painted surfaces , lacquer and porcelain ok. <o></o>

Maybe 3 things , it works better than anything else at preventing insect bites , having worked in the woods i had a chance to try it all and aside garlic it was the best protection .

You are not kidding, It mosquito's are Bad this year, One last nite nearly flew away with my Cat..
Thank God.. for the 12 gauge auto five Browning and it took all five shots, 00 buck to made it drop the Cat..

Avon skin so soft does work well, but you do smell like a gay Biker, or at least I do when I wear it..
And Galic is great also, just don't expect any Good looking ladies to want to kiss you after eating it..
RATS, another mosquito has my Cat, I'll be back on this..

Problem with this idea is I don't own a single long sleeve shirt, don't wear jeans except in the dead of winter..and only then if I am going to be outside of the house for more than an hour. Yeah, I wear shorts even when shoveling snow....get the craziest looks from the neighbors. If I could walk around nakkid...I would..especially when the temp gets into the HOT range...which for me is anything over 75.
