• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

a rant for avast

So if I understood the sequence correctly, you had Avast in the past, but you uninstalled it to install Avira instead, and then your computer got a problem with a virus or something similar ?

Have you tried launching Windows in safe mode to trigger a system restore to yesterday ?

bad news

The FUBAR fixer said my compute might need a complete wipe.

That means I lose all my flightsim files and other stuff... And I do not want to sacrifice all my files. :-(

This has worked for me when a client/friend/family member has needed me to destroy the village to save it....... :encouragement:
No backup I'm guessing (well, it happens a lot) and while a bit extreme, I've often re-loaded the O/S on a new Hard Drive (they're not that expensive), plugged the stuffed one in as a secondary and (most of the time) salvaged data that is important.
It needs to be done as a hot swap or the system will pickup the dud O/S and give you two start options, so don't even think about rebooting with the old drive 'hot'.
Without knowing your system I'm only going on what I can get away with, however, if you do get it sorted I suggest you buy a decent size external drive and use that as a permanent backup, and buy a decent anti virus/web security program.
Always best to plan for a Doomsday scenario!

Well my PC works, but I really hate starting all over from scratch. :banghead:

In which case:

  • Buy some good antivirus software. I'm currently using Kaspersky, but I have used Bitdefender. Avoid Norton, as it's too intrusive.
  • Use some anti-malware software to root out cookies and other nasties. Superantispyware is free and works well.
  • Get some disk imaging software, and use it regularly.
Maintenance - that's the key word here.

*Buy yourself a decent external HD and use it for a complete FS (and anything else) backup. For example, Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive 4TB A$200.00+/- loose change.

Used in conjunction with Crap Cleaner it's my choice and better than I first expected.
