A Video Production Question

I want to do a series of videos on using SBuilderX, to show some of it's features for producing photoreal scenery. I thought fraps would work for this but it doesn't. Does anyone have a suggestion on what other utility would do what I want? Basically I want to show the SBuilderX screen as I go through the various steps. I will also be doing a series to show what's involved in doing "Blurs, water and night maps" in Paint Shop Pro. So I need something that will capture only the primary monitor screen (and not migrate to the sim screen if I open it up during the video).

Thanks!

On Fraps make sure you setup the record external input as well.

Monitor Aero Desktop does some funny things when you use two screens. I think it works best to keep your application you are recording on the primary screen.

Thanks Dave. What I've run into so far is that with fraps, as soon as I open SBuilderX it stops recording. . .then with each subsequent keystroke or mouse click it stops again. . .so what I get are 1.5 meg snippets of video, lol. If I open FSX, which I need to do to show the steps involved in capturing the sat image, Fraps immediately goes to FSX and that's all it will record from that point on. So, Fraps is out unless I hear from them concerning this question.

As for Cam Studio. It looked like it was going to work, but it doesn't seem to be able to process the audio very well and also, the drop down menus I have to access while explaining the steps, don't show very well, very pixelated and only showing portions of the menu, then when the desktop appears with the sat image. . .all you get are small pixel boxes here and there. So this looked like the way to go, but unless I can figure out why it's doing this, it's also a dud, lol.

Do you have later Nvidia Video card? There is a function built into the newer cards that allows for recording on screen footage via the video card, sound and all! Its called Shadow Play and it doesn't slow the in game shots down at all. Not sure if this helps but wanted to throw it out there just in case.

Actually I tried that first because my card does support it. For the life of me though I could not find any way to get it to start recording. Supposedly Alt+F9 will start it, but that had no effect so I don't see how to activate it. As for the in-game ability...I'm not using it for that, I just need to have FSX running with the airplane sitting at the airport I'm using for the tutorial. It's SbuilderX that will be showing on the screen.

Fraps only records programs that are 'Full Screen' and not in 'Windowed' mode. Flight Sims (9 & FSX) will record if in 'Windowed' mode, but I don't think you can use that footage (ie: shows desktop and task bar, etc). If you can make program full screen (with 'Alt+Enter'), to where you can see the fps count (lower right corner), then that (program's screen) will be recorded.

Use a key to start/stop recording (toggle) of Fraps. I use 'Insert' key. Works well. No need for any 'F' key combo. Showing 'FPS count' at lower right cornere does not include the count in video recordings. You can use it to see if it's IS recording (numbers turn RED).

PS: You should look into 'Microsoft Expression Encoder 4'. Who knows, it might just work for you.

Amazing how easy that program is and how well it produces the sound and video. Anyway, I've completed the first part of the SBX tutorial but I want a few folks to take a look at it and see if it's easy to follow. So, anyone who has thought of trying SBuilderX to do photoreal scenery but has yet to get into it. If you can PM me your e-mail addy I'll send you the first video to test. Thanks. . .and thanks again to Chuck and orionII for the HU on Microsoft Expression!
