A work in progress...Battle of France

Good evening,

I'm continuing work on the Battle of France. To help provide greater authenticity, I'm trying to make the frontlines as close as possible to what they were on the the actual battlefield the day these missions would have been flown.

I've placed the two pictures side-by-side. The day for this mission is 18/05/1940. The dotted line represents the frontline for that given day. I'll continue working on the mission tomorrow.

That's going to be a refreshing theatre of war - interesting French machines, 2 blade Hurricanes and the VC getter - the Fairey Battle; the RAF's version of the kamikaze.

Rami I can't tell from your screenies but have you got coastlines on France, or is it the original cfs1 type scenery?

Excuse my ignorance but I'm just wondering if I've missed something - I've taken a conscious decision to only fly cfs2 with the cfs2 type scenery.

Boy, I just don't know how you do it! With all you got goin' on, where the heck do ya find the time? I have to start working on my ETO installs. Just getting my PTO up to snuff, and now Simonu has started a tread about how to set things up. I may never figure this sim out! I am hoping for one of those winters with so much snow that you can't get out the door. I can't wait to get things up and running in the ETO, again. Your campaigns are worth all the "work" involved for installing a few ETOs. I would be lost without your guide for this. We are very lucky to have guys like you, tireless young bucks, with a love for history, and the ability to present it to us in CFS2. "Thanks" is really never enough for all you continue to do. I am glad that you love doing this, and grateful that the rest of us get to enjoy all your hard work.:salute::salute::salute::ernae:

Flying Spud,

You can't see it when I'm zoomed out that far, but yes, France has coastlines. For the Battle of France, It's going to be an amalgam of several different parts.

The Battle of the Somme is based on G. West, inspired by Finn's recent work.
The Battle of France RAF / Stuka is based on Jagdflieger's work.
Durkirk is also based on Jagdflieger's work.

I'm also going to add two new things to this...I'm going to convert some CFS1 missions to CFS2, so that there will be additional French and German fighter / Zerstorer campaigns...

And if I can get information from our French camarades, (I sent a PM to Ajax and Dombral) there will be a brand-new element...two mini-campaigns (French-Italian) depicting the Invasion of France by Italy in the closing weeks of the conflict. (I have all the information I need on Italy)

I'd like to get this all done by Christmas...we'll see. I'm doing this in part because I owe a debt to GearyMcS, and wish to follow through on our agreement, and because it's a section of history that deserves more exploring.

And aircraft, you ask? Gloster Gladiators, 2-bladed Hurries, Fairey Battles, Bristol Blenheims, Messerschmitt Bf-109e and -110c fighters, Boulton-Paul Defiants, He-111s, Do-17s, Douglas DB-7 Bostons, Martin Marylands, Bloch 200s, Supermarine Spitfires, Dewoitine D-520s, Curtiss Hawk 75s, Morane-Saulnier Ms-406s, Bloch Mb-152s, Fiat Br-20 Cicognas, Cr-42s, G-50s...want me to go on?

Rami: your attention to detail and giving credit where it is due is quite refreshing. Your work ethic, unparalleled!:applause:

I know this is a noobie question but where can I get the coastlines for England and France so can enjoy more of your brilliant work? Is it mesh scenery I have to install? Because that's no prob - I've done the Japan one succesfully.

It's BaB mania over here at the momet, it would be great to fly over S. England in cfs2! Can you give me some links please.

Flying Spud,

Send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send you Sander's files. In addition, there are many bases available for England and Europe. It's by far my favorite place in CFS2! :wiggle:

Will do mate, thanks.

We've had some great TV over here the last few weeks for the BoB 70th anniversary, really got me thinking about it again.

It was quite moving watching the last few surviving vets at the BoB memorial overlooking the channel from atop the white cliffs of Dover. We got to see one old boy being reunited with the crash site of his Hurricane in a wood in Kent not far from Biggin hill. His Hurricane went in after getting clobbered by a 109 he didn't even see - obviously he'd bailed out ok. A guy with a metal detector only went and found what was left of his fighter for him - still there in the same spot - and dug up and gave him some pieces as souveniers!

Interesting interviews with people still living in the area that were teenagers back in 1940; including a couple who saw the Hurricane pilot who won his VC, they saw the actual combat overhead. Basically a 110 got on to the tail of a Hurricane that was chasing a bomber. The 110 set the Hurrie on fire, and the pilot was forced to exit his burning plane. However the 110 then slipped alongside the Hurricane, which must have annoyed this guy because he climbed right back inside his burning plane, kicked rudder and got behind the 110, nailed it (it went down in flames too), then he finally got out of his burning Hurricane and survived. Only VC one in the BoB I believe.

Our family lived near Kenley in Surrey during 1940, and my Mother remembers cycling to Croydon to see a German plane that had ended up on top of someones roof! From the description it was a 109. Empty shell casings everywhere apparently. She also remembered the German low level attack on Kenley too, there were a couple of Dorniers gracing the fields nearby for a while after and everybody tried to go and see them afterwards! The biggest thing she remembers though is the blitz, the worst part was the rain of shrapnel from our own AA guns!! Oh and the big spiders that lived in the air raid shelters that everyone had at the end of their gardens.

This one was a toughie...

Good evening,

I gotta confess, this one was a bit maddening. The pictures you see reflect the front lines as they were on May 21st, 1940. The Germans had thrust through the Cambrai pocket depicted in the first post on May 18th, and made it to the French coast, opening up a narrow corridor near Abbeville. This effectively sprung the trap that isolated the BEF from the French.

The reason why the British are in a "pocket" is that CFS2 will not allow two front lines that are "open," so I left the southern one open over the Channel to the west-southwest.

Using the map depicted and Google Earth, I was able to get coordinates so that I could run these front lines through the actual locations. (As closely as possible)

Because this took me a couple of hours, I'm going to finish working on the mission tomorrow.

Good night,

Amazing attention to detail, well done.

We Brits are used to being in pockets, especially in France; sometimes against the French at others against the Germans! Been fighting in and over that land since the 14th Century!

Now we take our holidays there instead........

Flying Spud,

Hopefully you do it in the Southern portion of France along the Riviera, where it's warmer.

LOL.

Rami that scenery works brilliantly - it's transformed the look of England and France. With the BoB airfields installed I'm smoking!! :wiggle: Thanks!

Is there any more of that amazing stuff that adds coastlines available for anywhere else WW11 I'm wondering?
