Aeroplane Books

In some previous book discussions here and in the other SOH forums I have recommended Aeroplane Books in Newport News, VA as a good source for Profile Publications and other out-of-print books and little-known titles. Sadly it appears that they have closed. They no longer have a phone listing and their website http://www.aeroplanebooks.com/ has apparently been taken down. They're on the other side of the water from me so I've never been to their shop, just ordered by phone and online. I'll update here if I find out more.

That's a shame. I always hate to see the smaller stores close down.

Borders, a rather large book chain, just announced that they just filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. An E-mail from them states their intent to continue on as normal, but the economy and the changing dynamics of digital books may eventually spell the end for them too.

News came today (Thursday) that Angus&Robertson as well as Borders had both gone into receivership.
Angus&Robertson seem to have been around forever, I purchased my very first 'Putnam' from them when I was around 15 ....... :kilroy:
Not good when a seemingly solid business dealing in 'knowledge' falls over.

I heard on the radio today about Border's downsizing and/or Chapter 13. One of the reasons given they were not managed well for the past many years. There's one near the home,....wonder if it'll be one of the stores on the hit list.
I find it a bit ironic,......the mega bookstores such as Borders, Walden,...and of course Barnes and Noble,....knocking out the Mom n' Pop bookstores as their competition,...only to be going belly-up now due to poor management and over expanding locations.

A lot of businesses going under lately for various reasons. Someone mentioned e-books. I'd rather have a real book in my hands that I can read anytime there's light.

Tarps, originally Aeroplane Books was opened and owned by Bill and Barbara Byrd of Williamsburg. They sold the business several years ago, but still operate a small book business out of their home, dealing mainly in World War I and II aircraft publications, Windsock Datafiles and such.

They still have a website and from where you live, if they have it, you'll get it in two days. Bill and Barbara are wonderful people and I have dealt with them for over twenty years, ever since they first opened Aeroplane Books. Contact them here for any questions. If they do not have the book, chances are they can get it real quick. http://www.byrdaviationbooks.com/

Caz, that's great news. :) Obviously I haven't ordered anything from them in a while but I liked their reasonable prices for books that you'd otherwise have to pay a lot for on Amazon or elsewhere. Tried to go to the old website the other night to check on a couple Osprey books and got nothin'. Thanks for the heads-up, I'll update my Favorites list and check out their current website.

Tarps, I get all of my Windsock Datafiles from them, Osprey Books too when I see them at model events. They ship to me by Priority Mail and I get the books mach schnell.

One of the Borders that is closing is our local one. Rent in that part of town is quite expensive which didn't help here. I don't often use Borders, so I won't miss them. We still have a Barnes and Noble and local bookstores including a really nice used book store. Perhaps there will be good deals as Borders sells off their stock.

FTR, the B. Dalton Bookstore chain was purchased by Borders and our local store went down with the Chapter 13. I no longer have a bookstore within an hour's drive to actually go and see nooks before I purchase. I guess it's time this Irishman bought an iPad (or an o'Paddie as we call them). The Internet might be progress, but until the iPad, we had nothing to carry to the Irish reading room, aka the Loo. It's always good in my world to have books.

One of the problems we are cursed with in Australia is a 33% tariff on ALL imported publications, the premise being this will 'protect' the domestic publishing industry along with local writers.
Not very clever, most people just go online and I guess more will do so.
I'm very lucky, my old mate from our racing days, one Tony Johns, set himself up as a part time Automotive Book Specialist, now officially retired TJ caters for the select few of us who go for the more eclectic motoring publications.
When it comes to aviation/military/naval/technical publications, an even older friend (now sadly deceased) set up 'Hylands Bookstore' dealing in everything an enthusiast could want, a tradition continued by his son.
I met Arthur Hyland a lifetime ago, and he was the sort of person who would import 'privately published' squadron histories from the US or the original Cross&Cockade journals for obsessed individuals like me.
Sadly, people like TJ and Arthur are few and far between.
