AFCAD replacement

What's the name of the program that replaced AFCAD? I'm going with newer stuff on the new comp.

Willy, I think you will really like ADE. I use it exclusively now. You can design your airport layout, place objects, etc., all with one program. Plus there's a lot of freeware scenery object libraries available for it.

The thing I like about ADE is the ability to import a google earth pic of the airport and build it to match exactly.

Pete.

The link provided to ADE went to a manual install that I couldn't get to work correctly. Now that I had the name of the program (Airport Design Editor), I googled it and got a download with an installer from the original author that seems to be working.

Still trying to figure out how to get it to open my add on scenery and AFCAD modded airports though. It doesn't seem to like AFCADs or I'm doing something wrong. Probably the latter.

Import your afcad as a bgl you can then mod it and save/compile as FS9 or FSX

Edit: Wrong advice, use Open Airport from Bgl. That's the one.

Willy, I just opened my program to see if I could offer some help. I don't think it will open previously modified airports. I think you have to use the "open stock airport" function and then make your changes. Once you've done that, it will then save the file in an ADE format and recompile the airport using the ADE format.

It's been almost a year since I had to completely redo all my scenery due to a computer crash followed by a purchase of a new computer.

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help.

Update: Looks like somebody was faster with the typing fingers than I. Seems like his advice is what I did in the beginning.

Nothing against ADE, but that's why I went with AFX. Even though it's payware, it was so much like Lee Swordy's AFCAD program that the learning curve was very small. In ADE's defense, I understand it can do some things that AFX can't, but for an almost seemless transition from AFCAD to a newer program, I found AFX to be exactly what I needed. Also, if you were to want to do a conversion from FS9 to FSX, it takes just a tick mark in a box to do the conversion. I tried to load an AFX built AFCAD into ADE once because it has the ability to do refueling areas and it stripped all the code from the AFCAD to make it compatible with ADE. I had to start over in AFX to get it back, lol. . . .I didn't need a fuel spot that bad after all, lol.

Open Airport from Bgl

For what it's worth, I find myself using both ADE and AFCAD.

ADE is a powerful and well tried and tested scenery creating engine.

Do take the time to read the tutorial Scruffyduck and team spent so much effort creating.

My suggestion would be that of Mickey D.

1. Fire up the programme.
2. In the File section (top left);
- Open Airport from Bgl;

direct finder to an AFCAD file you are familiar with, OPEN.

You will now see that afcad you know so well.

If you know AFCAD then you'll be familiar with most of what you see.

From here on, there is simply no substitute to simply taking your time playing, experimenting and having fun exploring the programme's capabilities.

You'll immediately notice that now you can start placing many of the default building and scenery objects too.

Have Fun!

I thought i'd give AED a try, im happy with most of my other programs and i dont think i'll use this for complete scenerys but i do like the idea of using background images for making up Afcads, ive always fancie'd making up RAF Mildenhall, basic scenery but with authentic ground plan, but its a really complexe layout, working from a google earth image makes life a whole lot easyer,
cheers ian

Now that Ian, would be something worth seeing. :jump:

Dont get to excited Nigel, its just that i fly out of MAIW Lakenheath quite often and the stock Hall looks unitresting , ive found a few add-on scenerys on the download sites but i dont really like any of them, so i figure i'll do the same as my Wyton, a few authentic objects and a sharper Afcad.
cheers ian

I ve just fired up AED for the first time, im not very good at read-mes and tutorials, i just dive in and see what cock-ups i make :icon_lol:
Im one of those guys who makes up flat pack furniture without reading the instrutions and worrys about how many screws ive left over when im finished :mixedsmi:

glad i'm not the only one who does that, i even make 'field mods' on the fly... good example being my old chest of drawers, i had it built.... fixed the top 3 drawers so they wouldn't open, got the jigsaw out, cut a TV sized hole in in it, couple of pneumatic pistons to raise the TV, a basic circuit linked to an IR Receiver relayted to the TV and Pistons et voila.... self-raising TV :icon_lol:

Ian, that's how I learned what little I know about AED. In my case, I just picked a little default grass strip and started seeing how badly I could mess it up.
Anytime I find a new scenery object library, I just add it and then place the objects to see how they look.

One of these days, I'm going to get the courage to try the library manage function and consolidate all the items I regulary use into one library. That way I won't have to go through all the many different ones I have installed just to find one object.

I went back and installed AFCAD to go with ADE. Thinking about buying the payware version though. Mostly I just used AFCAD to put in parking spots where I want them. Looks like I'll be having to buy FS Panel Studio again first though. I can't find my installer for it.

Willy, you can go through Flight1 and get everything back for Installing FSPanel Studio. They have an excellent system for retrieving lost keys and installers via their support page. I sure wouldn't buy it again until I looked into their support.

I bought it several years ago and have changed email addresses since then.
That's ok too, they have a system to let you associate the orders with your new e-mail address. If you have an order number or the certificate or both you can fix it. Even if you don't you can still retrieve it with a support ticket. They're pretty fast with replies.
