afterburner plume on jets

I have a couple Mirages, F-15 and RA-5C that came with afterburner effects, but even with them in the effects folder as they should be, I am not getting the burner plume that should extend out the back. But I also have a F-14D that has burner, but it is just a 2-d circle that moves with the throttle, and when at full throttle, the burner shows up in the tailpipe. Still looks cool, though. Is this have to do with not having Acceleration(have it, but need to update video card-grr) or a system glitch? If you have an idea, i am welcome to sudgestions.
