We are having Indian Summer this week after the rains. 70 degree plus yesterday and today. Since the trails were wet, I decided to take a stroll yesterday in lieu of a bike ride. It was so nice I walked four miles. Spied this little critter along the way back. About 18 to 20-in. in overall length. Cute as a button. By the bulges, looks like it's sunning after a good meal.

Nice shots Cazzie!

Looks like a Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus) to me, though it's hard to tell it apart from the Smooth Green Snake (Opheodrys vernalis).
Beautiful snakes but very hard to keep in captivity it seems, because of their feeding habits.

BTW those bulges look a bit odd to me; did they move down his body? A snake's stomach is about halfway down his body. When my corn snakes eat their food moves downwards quite quickly once it's swallowed. It might take a minute or so for them to swallow the rat or mouse, but once it is inside it will only take a few seconds to move it to their stomachs.

That is a nice looking Green Tree snake. When I was a wee lad, my older brother had a GTS that he carried in the pocket of his t-shirt. Sneaky, named after the Tom T Hall song, went everywhere with my brother. One day David was in the local Super America paying for gas and getting smokes. The gal behind the counter noticed Sneaky's head dangling from the pocket of David's shirt and , thinking it was a toy snake, commented on how cute the snake was. While she was turned around to get the smokes, Sneaky slithered out of David's pocket and onto the counter. When the gal turned back around, she came face to face with one very much alive Green Tree snake moving about on her counter. I can't recall if she screamed before or after she peed her pants. My brother never did fully understand why he was banned from that store.

After reading your post...I did some research on the Green Tree Snake....seems that particular snake doesn't live in southern Ohio. So, that little green snake my brother carried in his pocket was not a Green Tree Snake..that's what we called it because it was Green and he found it in a tree. He had Sneaky for 4 or 5 years and that snake was still small when David released it back into the wild...maybe 8 inches....short and thin enough to still fit easily into a t-shirt pocket.

Hey Obio, maybe this site can help?:

The Rough green snake will average about 22-32 inch in length, while the smooth green snake is shorter, from 14-20 inch.

Great story by the way, though it's typical for the average opinion people have about snakes. When I tell people I have two snakes, they assume they're either venomous or a gigantic python...
They'll calm down a bit when I show them the snakes, until I tell them I keep a bag of dead rats and mice in my freezer.. :icon_lol:

OBIO,

What you describe sounds like what we call a "Worm Snake" around here, little bitty rascals, even seen some earth worms larger!

That is a Rougn Green Snake ferry, the Smooth Green Snake is lighter in color. They make very suitable house pets, but because they are more active than corn snakes, they require a larger habitat and especially like branches for climbing. Their food is cheaper than what you get for corn snakes, when I had one, I just got live brown crickets from the fish bait shop. Toss in the bunch and the snake'll eat them when they get hungry. The have a long life in captivity if spoiled, around 15 years. I'd say that this snake is about full size, I rarely ever see one over two foot long. Very docile when it comes to biting, but they do like to wiggle and slither about.
